Les pièces de la ville de Carteia

(en) Carteia was a Punic-founded ancient city located at the mouth of the Guadarranque river, in the bay of Algeciras, specifically in modern-day Cortijo del Rocadillo, San Roque, Cádiz. The city was initially a small Phoenician settlement in Cerro del Prado, dated in the 7th century BC and located 2 km upstream. The abandonment of the primitive settlement is probably due to the progressive distance from the coast, which is why the new city was founded in the second half of the 4th century BC. The place presented magnificent strategic conditions: at the mouth of the river and at the bottom of the bay, which gave it special port characteristics and good communication with the interior of the territory. During the Second Punic War, Carteia became a naval base for the Barcids, with control over the passage of the Strait. The city was soon conquered by Rome. In 171 BC, through a "deductio", it became the first Roman colony outside the Italian territory, founded at the request of 4000 illegitimate children of Roman legionaries and Hispanic women and governed according to Latin law. The colony was officially named "Colonia Libertinorum Carteia" and was established after demolishing part of the wall of the Punic city. The city was located on the Via Heraclea, linked to the Rock of Gibraltar, Munda, and Colonia Patricia (modern-day Corduba). During the 1st century BC, Carteia was the most important port in the south of Hispania. The city was destroyed by Caesar after the civil war and the materials were reused in the subsequent Augustan reconstruction. The city reached an approximate extension of 27 ha. The mint of Carteia began to emit abundant bronze divisional conage from the first half of the 2nd century BC. (source: Leandre Villaronga, Jaume Benages; 2011.
