The Axarco , pronounced [axaɾko] , is a monetary unit of the towns of La Axarquía , in the eastern part of the province of Malaga , Spain .
Axarquia has the axarco, since 1988 , date in which Antonio Gámez Burgos, a native of Velez-Malaga degree in Chemistry , fan letters and Andalusian history, in an effort to build a unified region, decided to create a currency Of the axarco, a nexus of union between all the inhabitants of the region. Gamez initiative is inspired by the Moorish era of Andalusia , where from 1480 until 1490 the Zagal gave the region the existence of a currency. Gámez came up with the idea in his time as deputy, in which he investigated in depth the Arab era of the region. All documentation and the beginning of the creation of the currency was bequeathed to the town of Benamocarra .
Both coins and banknotes axarquillos axarcos and show the image of the botanist and physician malagueño Abén the Beithar , who introduced the cultivation of citrus in the region of La Axarquía. Currently, it is frequent to see posters in establishments in which it is specified that the use of the axarchical currency is accepted, being more used in the towns of the interior. In any case, most axarco coins and bills are kept by collectors, so their circulation is very limited.
Spokesman GIPMTM (Independent Group Pro-Municipality of Torre del Mar), Manuel Rincon, proposed in June 2007 the creation of a Board of Axarco in the municipality of Velez-Malaga , to be responsible for their reintegration in order to promote tourism in the region .
In November 2007 Antonio Gámez died.
