Les pièces du royaume de Naples

La section Italie - États du catalogue représente la masse d’États couvrant la péninsule italienne, ses îles et, dans certains cas, leurs colonies non italiennes couvrant la période allant de la chute de l’empire romain d’Occident en 476 à l’unification de l’Italie. finalisée avec la chute des États pontificaux en 1870. Au cours de cette période, des centaines de villes, d’États et d’autres entités émettrices de pièces sont apparus, certains pour leur propre compte, d’autres au sein de groupes plus vastes tels que le Saint Empire romain germanique, les États pontificaux ou la République de Venise. Ces entités ont produit des pièces de monnaie dans de nombreux systèmes monétaires différents, dont beaucoup héritent des noms de monnaies romaines. Sur le plan stylistique, la plupart des pièces des États italiens partagent une langue commune, le latin, avec une transition vers l’italien et ses dialectes aux alentours des XIIème et XIIIème siècles. Cependant, certaines pièces de monnaie de la région vénitienne émises pour ses colonies peuvent porter des alphabets grecs, tandis que d'autres de la conquête pré-normande du sud de l'Italie et de la Sicile portent des inscriptions en arabe ou en italien et arabe. Les thèmes communs aux créations de pièces comprennent les images religieuses, les emblèmes des familles dirigeantes et les évènements légendaires. Compte tenu de l'ampleur de ce champ d'action, les pièces italiennes non enregistrées sont des trouvailles courantes. Ni la soi-disant "Bible", le Corpus Nummorum Italicorum (CNI) du roi Victor Emmanuel III, un chef-d'œuvre de 20 volumes datant du tournant du XXème siècle, ni la Monete Italiane Regionali (MIR), une tentative contemporaine des chercheurs de recréer l’exploit de Victor Emmanuel III ne doivent être considérées comme complets.
