Benito Juárez (1806–1872) was a Zapotec born poor and orphaned at a young age, who taught himself Spanish and Law, and eventually rose through the political ranks to the presidency. He successfully led Mexico through the both the Reform War and the Second French Intervention, firmly establishing Mexican sovereignty.

Francisco I. Madero (1873–1913) was a wealthy landowner and the initial victor of the Mexican Revolution, having overthrown Porfirio Díaz who had ruled Mexico for over 30 years. After winning elections in 1911, he politically isolated himself and was usurped and murdered by one of his generals Victoriano Huerta. Today he is remembered as a martyr for the state.
