In 1976 the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (Portuguese colonial bank) was nationalized, becoming the Banco Nacional da Guiné-Bissau. The colonial currency until then, the Guinean Escudo, was replaced by the new Guinean peso with a unit parity. However, the first series of pesos is dated 1975, specifically September 24, 1975, to coincide with the second anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Amílcar Lopes da Costa Cabral (12 September 1924 – 20 January 1973) was a Bissau-Guinean and Cape Verdean agricultural engineer, political organizer, and diplomat. He was one of Africa's foremost anti-colonial leaders. He was also a pan-Africanist and intellectual nationalist revolutionary poet.
Also known by the nom de guerre Abel Djassi, Cabral led the nationalist movement of Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands and the ensuing war of independence in Guinea-Bissau. He was assassinated on 20 January 1973, about eight months before Guinea-Bissau's unilateral declaration of independence. He was deeply influenced by Marxism, becoming an inspiration to revolutionary socialists and national independence movements worldwide.
