Banknotes on Numista - questionnaire
Posté le : 27-07-2019, 7h04 dans Banknotes

1) Yes! • 2) The way I see it being done is to have the banknotes being added in the same catalogue and currency divisions as coins. I would also suggest having a feature in the search and at the top of the page to show either coins, banknotes or both. • 3) I would be very happy to create the banknote catalogues for the countries and issues I referee for. I feel this should not be overly time consuming or difficult as there are a significant less amount of banknote types than coin types (at least for my countries).

[résolu] Australian 1 cent coin KM# 78. It has 3 listings
Posté le : 25-05-2019, 4h03 dans Numista catalogue

Generally in Australian numismatics a circulating, uncirculated (BU on the American scale) and proof coins of the same specifications and design are considered to be three different coins. This is because the process in making the three different coins all involve a different method for them being made. In general it makes more sense for an Australian collector to have them separated out like this. Also while Numista is based on the KM system, the site does not have to follow the same layout as the books. • After some similar forum posts it was decided to leave an example of how it looks so that the high up admin can make a decision on if they like it or find a way that it can work in a future update to the way the catalogue works. While I personally do prefer this system I will happily undo it once the high up admin have made their decision.

[résolu] Additions to the Australia Sovereign Perth Mint year mintages
Posté le : 18-02-2019, 1h14 dans Numista catalogue

I had to create a new page for the 2019 coin as it uses the new portrait of the Queen. • It can be found here: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces160567.html

Australian 1944 Penny with 2 mint dots
Posté le : 16-02-2019, 5h12 dans Coin identifications and valuations

The dot behind the “Y” in “PENNY” means that it was struck at the Perth Mint. The dot below the tail is mostly like a small cud error or something similar, it is not a mintmark.

[résolu] add dates with P mint to "2015 - 25 Dollars - Elizabeth II First Australian Sovereign "
Posté le : 16-10-2018, 11h52 dans Numista catalogue

It is a little difficult keeping up with it all especially since Australia has two mints where one of them is dedicated to just producing non-circulating commemorative coins and bullion coins all for profit. Thankfully there are a few members here who collect those coins and add them to the catalogue.

What countries do you collect?
Posté le : 21-09-2018, 19h56 dans Free discussion

My main areas of collecting are: • Australian numismatics • Israeli numismatics (including BM Palestine and Ottoman times) • Ancient Judean numismatics (including associated types)

[résolu] Palestine uncommon demonetization of Eshkol
Posté le : 17-09-2018, 9h41 dans Numista catalogue

Yes this is a mistake in the Israel catalogue. I just double checked with the Bank of Israel website which states these coins are not demonetorized. I actually found one of these in my change here in Israel a few weeks ago. It should now be fixed. Thanks

[résolu] I1934 100 mils palestine coin
Posté le : 10-09-2018, 21h41 dans Coin identifications and valuations

My two Israeli coin catalogues state the value of one of these in a grade of "fine" at $200 USD. While I do agree that often catalogue prices are too high, I believe that these two coins were purchased for an ok price especially considering that they are the scarcest mintage of the series. My only issues with the coins is that one has been cleaned and the other has what looks like some sort of verdigris or PVC damage on it.

Inconsistent dating in Palestine (Israel) coins
Posté le : 23-08-2018, 16h20 dans Numista catalogue

This is because festival of Hanukkah (which the second coin commemorates) occurs in December just before the new Gregorian year. Because of this they are assigned a Gregorian year with a deference of 3761 from the Hebrew year as opposed to the standard 3760. • For those that do not understand how the Hebrew calendar works this can be hard to properly describe. I hope what I wrote makes some sense.

Australian 1918 Penny Dot After AUSTRALIA Variety?
Posté le : 27-11-2017, 23h35 dans Numismatic questions

Citation: "Essor Prof" • • The first picture shows how a "dot after Australia" variety should look like (although this is a picture of a "dot after Australia" of another type) On your picture you even hardly can see where the dot is. And as you can see on your enlargement, the dot is not at the same height as the base of the letters. So in my opinion it's very very doubtful this is the "dot after Australia" variety. The fist picture does show a "dot after Australia" variety but for the kangaroo penny type and not the George V penny type. Dot varieties on George V penny types were never like the kangaroo types and are usually vary small like the one seen on Edduns's coin. I still believe that you have the "dot after Australia" variety but I cannot completely confirm as I have had trouble finding a picture of one of this exact penny variety to confirm.

New coin type: error
Posté le : 18-11-2017, 9h26 dans Numista website

Citation: "anarchisto"So, for instance, this Australian coin https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces90246.html (Indian ¼ Anna Obverse Mule) should not be a "common coin", but rather a "pattern"?This coin should definately not be classed as a "pattern" as that would imply that this mule was deliberately struck (which it was not). Also this mule coin circulated freely as any regular coin meaning that out of the current classifications "common coin" would be most correct, however "error coin" would probably be most correct.

Below is a list of things I believe should be fixed and corrected: • "In 1939 Australia was granted self-rule by the UK." • I am a bit confued with what this means. As an Australian this is something I have not head of, so I went and did a quick Google search and could not find anything on this point. I believe this point is incorrect as Australia received full independence and self-rule from the UK on the 1st of January 1901 as part of Federation. Self-rule from the British was the main reason why Australia federated in 1901. Also Australia had a degree of self-rule before Federation in 1901 as after a certain date (I cannot remember at this time) the colonies in Australia were self governing with a large degree of self rule from the British. • "Australia used British Pounds until 1910" • I think that it would be better to say somthing like, "Australia used British Pound sterling from 1788 until 1910". Also the Australian cata[...]

Posté le : 21-10-2017, 2h18 dans Numista catalogue

Concerning the comment about a dash, I will try and message the member that first added that comment to the coin file. I am guessing that it could have something to do with either the dash in the Hebrew date or possibly something to do with the Arabic lettering. Hopefully the member that first added that comment will be able to tell me. • The reason why KM# 14 and KM# 13.1 are divided is because of Israel's move from using the Palestine pound to the Israeli pound/lira in the June of 1952. The 1949 dated issues of these coins were struck and issued as coins of the Palestine pound while the post June 1952 coins were struck and issued as coins of the Israeli pound/lira. Because countries in Numista are largely divided internally by currency, KM# 14 and KM# 13.1 had to be divided as both contained coins struck and issued under two different currencies. This can be a bit confusing to some because many people do not know that Israel actually used the Palestine pound as its offical cu[...]

If a coin has different specifications then I would added it a a new coin file. However when this coin was submitted it showed the incorrect weight of "31.13" (which I assumed was the correct weight) the same weight as this coin making me believe that it should be placed in that coin file that had the exact same specifications and design (excluding the gold platting). Now that I can see it actually has different specifications I will happily validate the new coin file once it is resubmitted. It should also be noted that when viewing the modification history one can see that the KM# was only added after I rejected it.

A few of my favourite coins from Israel have images of ancient Judean coins on them such as as these ½ Lira, 50 Sheqalim and 5 Agorot coins. Also the majority of Israeli coins have their designs inspired from other ancient Judean coins. The obverse design of this 1 New Sheqel coin is directly inspired by the obverse design of this ½ Ma'ah-Obol.

Are referees allowed to reject the addition of a new coin only because it have no pictures?
Posté le : 23-03-2017, 1h32 dans Numista catalogue

Citation: "neilithic"But it would be so easy to rectify all these complaints by making a decision and setting up rules about what we do and don't allow into the catalogues and the basic structure of the catalogues. I feel that more clearly set rules are needed for Numista so these types of issues can be solved much more quickly and efficiently and not present too much of an issue in the future. • Going back to the original issue of this thread. The referee has asked for a modification request saying, "I don't know the coin you are talking about and furthemore I have no reason to publish a useless page due to the lack of photos". he then goes on to say "I just realize that the page you want to add already exist (link provided). You just have to add the mint and the years". These is indeed a similar coin but I will have to check if they are in fact closely related enough.

Any Aussie experts?
Posté le : 03-03-2017, 12h20 dans Coin identifications and valuations

It can be quite difficult to tell a proof predecimal coin from an non proof coin. Usually the way to tell is if all the details are perfect and sharp. One place to look at is if the queen's hair blends into the background of the coin. If it does it's not a proof but if its clearly sharp then it could be a proof. Another place to look at is the beading of the border. Again they all need to be perfectly sharp for it to be a proof. A couple of the coins do have some slightly flatter spots on the beading (see picture below) but this may just be the pictures. Your coins could be proofs but I can not say for certain. Even if they are not they are really good quality coins. •

Citation: "Dr4gonkiller96"this is one of the first minted 1966 Australian 10 cent coins from Canberra (not London) and im confused if the Milled edges are just gone or were never added as its the same as a normal 10 cent coin with diameter and thickness. (note its also the exact same all around so if i turn it, it would be identical). need help on this one. • • this next coin is fairly new 2005 $1 Australian Coin but is slightly mistruck at opposite sides of the obverse and reverse sides of the coin. • The missing milled edge on the 10 cent coin is not an error but caused by wear to the coin. It's quite common to find the older coins like this. • The slight missalingment on your 1 dollar coin is too small and common to be considered an error. Personally I do call it an error but the majority Australian coin collectors will disagree.

I'm Jewish and also have grandparents and great grandparents who survived and others who did not survive Nazi persecution during the Shoah (Holocaust). By removing the coins and censoring the history out completely is denying that the Shoah took place. • Should the discussion of Third Reich artifacts be prohibited? • I wouldn't prohibit discussion on artefacts as long as the people discussing are not trying to glorify or justify the actions of the Nazis. • Have you omitted these coins from your collection? • I don't actual have any in my collection but this is not deliberate. What is your country's last circulating silver coin?
Posté le : 02-09-2016, 1h48 dans Free discussion

Australia's last circulating silver coin was the 1966 round 50 Cent coin. After first being introduced into circulation in 1966 the price of silver quickly went up to a point where the metal value of the sliver was worth way more than $0.50. So as a result all were withdrawn from circulation and the composition changed to copper-nickle for the 12 sided coin that replaced it. • https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6761.html

Posté le : 23-06-2016, 13h45 dans Free discussion

Personal I don't have too many issues with Numista. But being the referee for three countries I have noticed a samll problem with the addition of deletion of currencies within the country list. I have changed and fixed up some of the currencies within two of the county lists I am a referee for and I believe it would be better if I could go through it with someone who can properly change the currencies and delete the incorrect ones. Thanks

The Pride Of Your Collection
Posté le : 07-06-2016, 10h50 dans Free discussion

I have a few coins in my collection that I believe are considered to be the pride of my collection. I'll show a few starting with the oldest coin first. • First is this Australian 1910 threepence coin. 1910 was the first year that the Commonwealth of Australia issued its first national coinage and was also the only year to feature the portrait of King Edward VII. • https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces12495.html • The second is this Israeli 10 lira coin that celebrates the victory of the Six Day War and the capture of the Eastern Jerusalem. This one belonged to my Great Grand Father who's side of the family had some interesting involves with that place. • https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces87698.html • The third is this Australian 1993 sliver dollar bullion coin master. For those who do not know what a coin master is, once the dies are ready to struck a new coin, one of those dies has a test run. What this test run produces is this coin master[...]

[résolu] German Notgeld
Posté le : 27-05-2016, 6h54 dans Free discussion

This is how I look at this issue and similar ones. Were they officially recognised by the German Government at the time as an actual offical currency? I don't know the answer to this. If the answer is yes then I would have them all put in the German catalogue probably under a subcategory. If the answer is no then what I would do according to my opinion is to then have them all put into the tokens section. This is just a set of guidelines I have according to my opinions on what is considered offical currency and what is not.

Australian trader's tokens (1849 - 1874)
Posté le : 07-03-2016, 1h37 dans Numista catalogue

Hi, sorry for any inconveniences. I have temporarily moved them out so I can rearrange and fix up parts of the catalogue. I was planning to bring up this issue latter of where these tokens should be placed in the catalogue. My opinion is that they should stay in the tokens section because of multiple reasons. But my plan is to see what the Numista community thinks is right before any real deception on this topic is made.

I would love to become co-referee for any or all of those. If anyone would like to take control of Italian States, I would be fine with that due to my lack of knowledge about them. I would gladly give up Italian States for Australia, Canada or US.I became the referee for Australia almost a month ago and since then I have either accepted or rejected any request with in 24 hours of when i first see them. I was not aware that their was a change of referees for Australia. Can anyone help shed some light on these Australia Silver Bicentenary tokens?
Posté le : 12-12-2015, 8h36 dans Coin identifications and valuations

Maybe they were issued by the Western Australian government and distributed to school children, or at some kind of event similar to what the Australian Government did with a different medal at the time. Also I don't think they are worth a lot, probably only their silver value. • This is is all only a guess but to me it's currently the most plausible answer.
