The above post isn't how to do it!

    Guidelines for editing the catalog

This page lists the directions for creating, enhancing or fixing the catalog pages. Thanks for following them as much you can.

A page describes a coin type. It may group several variations whenever a small design detail varies and the KM numbers have the same main part, like KM#3.1
and KM#3.2. On the other hand, if the coin uses a different metal, create another page, like KM#3a and KM#3b

When fields use free text, use lower caps. Use upper caps only for the first letter in sentences or names. Do not type all upper caps.

Also, please, use good writing, spelling and syntax.

For all fields, you'd better leave them blank than enter erroneous information.    Skip
    them if you aren't sure.

        Coin name

Give the coin a name. Build the name using the following items in order:

  •                 Facial value

If the facial value shows on the coin, use the same label in Latin alphabet.

Do not give any equivalent value, even though it shows on the coin.

  •                 If it's a commemorative issue, tell in short who or what is commemorated, starting with an upper case. Separate it from the facial value with
                    an hyphen.

If this is the case, ignore the next two items.

  •                 If a monogram or a sovereign portrait shows on the coin, give the name in English. Separate it from the facial value with an hyphen.

If various portraits of the same sovereign were used across the years, specify in brackets the portrait number (1st, 2nd, 3rd…).

  •                 If usage gave the coin a specific name, give it next. It is usually the coin design or the

                        engraver

                    name.

If the sovereign name was already typed, put it in brackets.

  •                 If there are several pages due to variations, it may be of interest to specify it in short in the brackets.

  •                 If the coin was minted by an organization or a government different from the one showing in the "Issuing authority" field (listed next) state
it in English within the brackets.

                Examples

            10 Halalas

            2 Cents - Elizabeth II (3rd portrait)

            50 Centimes - Morlon (aluminium)

            5 Francs - Tour Eiffel

        Issuing authority

Select the country where the coin comes from or the issuing authority if that country is not recognized.

You may select "Unknown" if you are not sure (at the top of the list) or "Other" (bottom) if you want to create a new country.

        Facial value in word form

Type the facial value using figures and typing the currency in letters.

If the unit is not 1/100th of the main currency, specify the value as per the main currency using fractions.

                Examples

            2 dollars

            3 kopeks

            1 penny=1/12 shilling=1/240 pound

        Facial value in figure form

Enter the facial value using a numeric value. This value is per the main currency you selected (listed next)

Use the number of figures according to the main currency split. Five cents will type as 0.05. Fifty Tunisian millims will type as 0.050.

If the value has no simple decimal form, you may write it in a fractional form.

                Examples

            0.05 (for 5 cents)

            0.050 (for 50 fils)

            1/120 (for 1/120 pound, instead of 0.00833333...)

        Currency

        Select the coin currency.

Currencies are sorted by the issuing authorities. This can be tricky when the authority is a central organization rather than a country.

                Examples

            Eurozone - euro

Central Africa (BEAC) – CFA franc

Check for the starting date, possibly the comment, which will help you selecting the right currency.

                Examples

            Angola - kwanza (1977-)

            Angola - kwanza (1990-)

            Angola - kwanza (1995-)

            Angola - kwanza (1999-)

Creating a page for a 1991 Angola coin, you will select "Angola - kwanza (1990-)".

You may also select "Unknown" (top of the list) if you can't decide or "Other" (bottom) if you want to create a new currency. In that case, type the
currency name as requested. Do not type the country name as it will be automatically added by Numista.

        Token

Select whether or not the coin is a monetary token. A token is a coin which was minted by a private organization. It can also be a coin without any
        monetary facial value.

If you are not sure, select "Unknown".

        Non selected trial strike

Select whether or not the coin is a trial strike that wasn't selected at the end of a coin competition.

If you are not sure, select "Unknown".

        Commemorative coin

Check whether it is a commemorative coin. Such a coin was minted for only one or two years, in order to celebrate or honor a particular person or
        event.

If you are not sure, select "Unknown".

If you selected "Yes", type in who or what was commemorated. Do it in a short way. You can give more details in the description sections. Also, check
whether that coin was actually used or only produced for collectors.

        Demonetized coin

Check if the coin has been demonetized.

If yes, enter the date of the last day were this coin was accepted. Use the required date format. Still, depending on your knowledge, you may enter
        only the year.

                Examples

            12-31-2001

            00-00-1875

        KM number

Type in the ID number as set in the "Standard Catalog of World Coins" published by "Krause Publications", KM# or Y#. Use the latest edition available
        to you.

If a page includes several variations segregated by the World coins, then, do not type the variation number, the one after the dot. You will type it in
        the mintage year comment

The coin possibly had a different ID number in an earlier edition. Then, give that information in the description sections (listed next).

If you are not sure, leave the field empty.

                Examples

            KM#302

            KM#4a

            Y#27

        Metal

Type in the metal(s) use in the coin. Use the English spelling. For Gold and Silver, type in the fineness.

Leave this field empty if you don't know the metal.

                Examples

            Cupro-nickel

            Aluminium bronze

            Copper plated steel

            Silver 900‰

        Weight

Type in the coin weight in grams. Enter as many decimal figures as your measure or information is precise (no more, no less).

Leave this field empty if you don't know the weight.

                Examples

            2.3

            5.10

            0.65

        Diameter

Type in the coin diameter in millimeters. Enter as many decimal figures as your measure or information is precise (no more, no less).

If the coin isn't round, (scalloped, square...), measure the largest diameter; on a square coin, you would measure the diagonal. Leave this field empty
if you don't know the diameter.

        Thickness

Type in the coin thickness in millimeters. Enter as many decimal figures as your measure or information is precise (no more, no less).

Leave this field empty if you don't know the thickness.

        Shape

Type in the coin shape. If it has a hole, then type it and give the hole shape if it is not round. If the coin is scalloped, give the number of
scallops. If the shape name is unusual, you may explain in brackets.

Leave this field empty if you are not sure on how to describe the shape.

                Examples

            Round

Square with a hole (meaning, a round hole)

            Round with a square hole

            Scalloped (10 scallops)

            Hendecagonal (11 sides)

        Orientation

Select whether the coin has a coin or a medal orientation. A coin orientation means that the image on one face of the coin is upside-down relative to
the other. A medal orientation means that the image on one face of the coin is rightside-up relative to the other.

If you are not sure or the orientation is different from these two cases, select "Unknown".

        Engraver (obverse and reverse)

Type in the name of who engraved this coin. It could be the designer's name if the engraver is unknown. However, if both are known, type the engraver's
name here. You will type the designer's name in the description section (listed next).

Only type the initials and the name. If two engravers worked on this side, type both names with an ampersand (&) in between.

Leave this field empty if you are not sure or don't know the engraver name.

                Examples

            A. Machin

            J.-J. Barre

            T. Soteropoulos & E. Maell

Description with keywords (obverse, reverse and edge)

Describe the coin as precisely as you can, using the followings:

  •                 Use generic words like "bird", as well as technical word, like "great rhea (Rhea americana)".

  •                 If the coin shows shorted words or phrases, give the full text and translate it if it's not in English.

  •                 All explanations on what you see on the coin, the story behind it, anecdote on the coin and any cultural background are welcome.

  •                 Specify where each item you describe is located on the coin.

  •                 When variations occur, list them and explain how to identify them.

  •                 Regarding the edge, type whether it is milled, smooth or else. If milled, the number of dents is of interest. If the edge carries text, type
whether it is above or below the edge level, how many times the text repeats.

        Lettering (obverse, reverse and edge)

Copy very precisely the coin lettering. You may use a "special keyboard" to type non usual characters.

        Use the followings:

  •                 Use the very same upper/lower case (usually uppercase) and spelling shown on the coin.

  •                 Do not type any translation or explanation. Use the Description field to that purpose.

  •                 When a picture is available, type the displayed date and mint letter. Otherwise, type a possible date and letter. Do not type generic text like
                    "date".

  •                 Try and type the same types of dots: lower dot (.), middle (·) or colon (:). The middle dot is available from the special keyboard/Latin

  •                 Include the small letterings like the engraver name and motto on the coats of arm. That is, if you can read them.

                Examples

            ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA·F:D:

            1 CENTAVO 1985

KINGDOM OF LESOTHO KHOTSO PULA NALA 1992

        Picture (obverse, reverse and edge)

Use picture in JPEG format. It can be a picture from a camera or a scanner. Obverse and reverse use two different files. If you send a picture of the
edge, prefer a flat picture format.

Below is some optional guidance that will result in better pictures:

  •                 Definition: Scan the coin at 720 dpi or more. If you use a camera, make sure that the picture shows the smallest details.

  •                 However you make the picture, use a white background. If possible, cut out the coin on your computer. It will result in a fully white
                    background.

  •                 Otherwise, cut a square picture so that the coin uses the full picture area

  •                 Make the picture of an upright coin. If not, you may also rotate it on your computer.

  •                 You may also slightly improve the contrast and colors on your computer. Of course, the nicer the original coin, the nicer the picture.

        Copyright (obverse, reverse and edge)

Use only pictures for which you have copy rights or if the copyrighter authorized you to display the pictures on Numista. In both cases you may use
"Copyright" field and type the picture owner name.

        Calendar

Select the calendar to be used for the mintage years.

The date is sometimes given using both the local and Gregorian calendar. In that case, select the local calendar. Numista will automatically calculate
and display the Gregorian year next to it. You may select "Unknown" if you are not sure (top of the list) or "Other" (bottom) if you want to create a
        new calendar.

Year – Mint letter - Quantity - Comment

Use one line per issue. There can be several lines per year in case of several varieties. Only varieties that are described in general catalogs should
appear, not too specific changes nor errors. The minor varieties can be specified by each collector as a "personal comment".

        For each mintage, type:

  •                 The year showing on the coin. If no date shows, put it in the comment and use the minting date if known.

  •                 The mint letter

  •                 The quantity: Total number of coins minted that year with that letter

  •                 Comment (optional). You may describe the specifics of that mintage. Give the full KM like KM#3.1, KM#3.2 or KM#3.3). Duplicate the full same
comment on each line if required.

                Examples

            Year:
            1385

            Mint letter:
            W

            Quantity:
            3,524,000

            Comment:
            KM# 3.1 (small nose)

How to made my collection? To add?
All steps
To catalogue your coins you have to: Search for a coin in your collection using the Search bar to your left. Type in a defining feature, country, date, find your coin. When found click on the link and this will take you to a coin sheet. When there...enter the number of coins you have in the boxes provided under the grade you have. If you have any for exchange place a number in the exchange box.
Continue to search for coins and gradually your collection will grow. To save the changes just click backwards out of the coin sheet or search for another. Any questions ask around. Welcome to Numista and enjoy.

I am not able to add new coins to the database that is missing. How can I add for example a Norwegian 2 skilling 1660 coin? I have several Norwegian coins that are not listed in the database. I am asked for username and password when trying to add new coin.

On the Home page is that message in the link above - contributions to the catalogue are temporarily suspended before the introduction of a new system. I guess sometime this week it will be here again.

The two new coins of Finland don´t exist in catalogue of Numista. Why?

:)    Because it is Numista members who enter the coins on here, so no member has done so, yet ...

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/contributions/nouveau.php

http://rsmint.com/architecture.aspx
it seems there is a spelling mistake.
Instead of

the category correcponding to their country

in the token section it's better to write

the category corresponding to their country

My suggestions https://t.me/enjoyyourcollection
I have one suggestion, please let me know if this makes sense.

When you create a new page for a coin you can fill the "KM number" field but in my opinion it makes more sense to ask for "Catalog number" instead. Maybe I wouldn't notify but when I created a new page, when I saw KM number I completed just with the number because it makes sense for me (and yes, I know there's a guide with some examples how to complete this field) and this may be tricky.

This is just my humble opinion.   z)
Hi. Can anyone help me? I can't change the year of this coin. In the page you read "?" but in the coin you can read perfectly clear 1998:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39750.html
What do I do?
I changed it now. Thanks  :)
Hi. None of these coins are listed in Numismaster:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39752.html
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39749.html
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39751.html
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces50582.html
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39750.html

And I can't find their KM value anywhere. Does that mean they don't exist?
There are some coins with the same reverse  but with different values and metals. What should I do? Do I erase them all?
Regards
The dates might be incorrect, which is why you may not find them. I'll look them up later today for you.

Hi Bam,

Would it be possible to ask again to members asking for a change to edit the title of their post once the change was done, issue solved etc.
I know it was already done but ... It really increases visibility.
For both catalog and Identifications

Yes, this is a good idea.

i recommend that users that have registered a change add the words (Changes Made) in brackets next to the catalogue forum title.

MASSIVE :) Thanks to Jarcek for starting active and vital activities to update our catalogue, progress in coins validation and active work on forum and with us! RESPECT!
Hope later other moderators will show their passion and we will improve all here seriously!

BUT I have a very important note regarding editing of catalogue - I suppose coins without Photo and with very very limited amount of information rather showed be hided until further update or immediately updated by request from moderators by those who owns such coins!

Please do so.

I see a lot of mystical non-understandable coins which I cannot say about - this is what I have in my collection, I need to tick here.

THANK YOU!
Many thanks B., but I do not believe I deserve all the credit.

Both Chomp-master and Ecapoe deserve to be praised as well, as they are specializing in Antics and Habsburg coinage respectively. Both these categories takes much more time to verify one single coin, than new coin from Isle of man, pictured in Krause. ;)

By today I have seen only you. But Andre joint the action of verifying also. THanks!
I tried to add a few coins from Cayman Islands that I have (and found at NGCcoin.com) but not in Numista database. failed totally each time I tried. Is there anything wrong recently such as user's rights to add/modify?

tks
Hi everyone, I have twice read how to add a new coin, I have tried to add 4 coins to Greece ancient, it seemed to be successful and the site said to wait until coins were seen for a team member of Numista. Well I don't know why but coins aren't added, I tried to contact Numista 3 times but there was no luck either.

Well, does someone know how if there is any trick to do it? I have a big amount of old coins to add and improve catalog but I am not able to.

Please I would appreciate any help in order to improve the lists.

Thanks to everyone in advance
!!!

I collect all kinds of circulating coins, specially old greek coins.

I've got notes that I'd like to swap for coins as I'm not interested on notes.
Hello, how can I create the title of the coin where part of it is in a smaller font? Like '1 Crown - Elizabeth II Siberian Cat'

Hi, I dont really know about English coins, what I really know it's about Greek coins, and if you aren´t Kaiserkiller's friend (you allow him to swap some coins with you for so much less than they are really worth it) you aren´t able to add any coin, and specially if you have coins he doesn't have.

Kind regards

Hello,
Should I mark token as " Circulating issue" if the token was in circulation or active usage? Or this is just for coins?
I asking because some tokens which actually were in active coirculations ( casino tokens, phone tokens etc) have in the title " Non-circulating issue" . In case of tokens, I think its wrong.
What is TEAM`s opinion?
I usually mark them as circulating, because for example transport tokens (and others you mentioned) surely circulated between people.
Catalogue administrator
thanks. So i`ll do same .

No need to be his friend to find a technical issue. It seems your file requests for Ancient Greece are not available. 2 possibilities: the files were rejected but since then you probably won't be able to see the requests anymore, or a technical issue occurred, hiding your requests to anyone able to see the requests. Please send me the links to the unpublished files if they're part of your collection list in Numista.

You need to post that question in the "Coin Identifications and Valuations" forum.  It is the second forum down after clicking the "Forum" tab.  Do that and I am sure someone that can help you with info on your coin will reply.
Hello, I tried adding a page last year for the 30th anniversary edition of the silver American Eagle $1 coin. This is different from the bullion coin already listed on the website. I did my best to follow all of the instructions for adding a new coin, but the page has still not been published. It shows up in my collection, but not in the catalogue. Did I miss a step?
Warm Regards,
Patty

Hello.
It is likely that the referee has not yet confirmed your request. Usually it can take some time, even a few days.

Hello. I own a coin "50 stotinki" from 1981 from Bulgaria. Apparently, that year is not included here - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces4029.html Can it be fixed? Thanks in advance :)

Were your requests rejected by a referee? Or you're just not able to submit a creation request?
You can send me print screens by PM if you have.

Hello,

does any one know how to enter a coin with 100/100 Silver fineness so that the silver value is reflected at the bottom?

Hallmarking is voluntary especially with these privately made stuff they probably think this will give them a selling boost (1000 is better than 999). But when you do hallmarking it has to be with a 8/1000 tolerance in the case of silver. So for the 1000/1000 token it should be at least .992 silver.
Thanks for the swift responses.

I’m brand new so please forgive me if I have misinterpreted the guidelines. I’ve been listing my collection for hours today and have just stuck a problem. I’m listing all my Australian Unc Year Sets to start with.

The Australian issue 2003 Australia’s Volunteers Six Coin Uncirculated Set contains 3 commemorative coins - 20c, 50c, $1. In the Numista catalogue, the 20c and 50c don’t have the option of UNC Year Set.

*I’ve also added at least four coins to the catalogue. Do we get notification if/when they are appproved? Thanks!

Hi Staffygirl ... I have been going through all of the Australian Coin section for some time now making amendments and adding missing entries. When I started there were so many missing issues in the Australian Section it was not funny. For a while there was only one Australian Referee (Australian Coin Info) and I bombarded him with requests.

Only a short time ago he invited me to be Co-Referee with him to help with managing the Australian Section. I accepted and so now we have two referees for Australia.

Yes you will see when your requests have been approved/accepted by clicking on the Catalogue Tab and then on the dropdown click on "My Requests". When they are validated you will see that it will say validated on the right in Green.

Regarding the 2003 coins you have mentioned above. I had not got to them yet, (I had done the $1) but I am adding them now. Plus the Baby sets and Wedding sets that they were in also.

If you have any other questions you might like to send me a message via pm.

Cheers Mike

That is not a request .. It is a post asking for help to add a coin. Can you add the coin using the standard procedure and then it will become a request. Then it can be validated and added to the catalogue.

I have noticed that there are many issues of the Somalia Elephant 1oz silver bullion coin program that only show space for one date. Extra spaces in the date section are needed for privy marks and also colored and gilded versions of these same dates. I am not sure how to add the information and mintage on these variations to the current listings. Any ideas?

You just have to ask the referee to open up some extra lines for the coin you need to add extra entries to.

Cheers Mike

Hello dears, I wanted to contribute and I am waiting for the approval of this piece. If there is something wrong I ask you to communicate, but I believe I have filled in the fields correctly.

I can see maybe four or five parts that (to me) are not correct.

1 - There is no country chosen.
That is needed so that the creation request goes to a referee.
2 - What is that in obverse section?
If it is lettering that should be in the lettering box, not the description box.
You have, though, done it correctly for the reverse.
3 - Talking of description, there is none for either side.
4 - There is nothing in the edge box. Is it plain or reeded?
5 - Maybe. Do you have clear pictures of both sides, if possible?
:)
Take this as an example for the country and currency

Idolenz and ZacUK,
I filled in based on the pieces already registered, when I realized that one coin is missing. I filled in all the applicable fields and deduced that they will only appear to everyone if approved, being visible only to administrators.
I also uploaded pictures before sending the request.
The lettering box I put in is similar to that shown in the other pieces already approved.

Hello everyone,

I am new in numista and I very much love the website. I was looking for some general tutorial how to edit/modify the coin catalog (how does it work here). I found the guideline but it didn't answer all of my questions. How do I proceed in this particular case? I wanted to add a coin to my collection but I couldn't find it in the catalog. After a while I found that the coin in fact is in the catalog but the images for that coin are wrong:

All other information about the coin seems to be right, even the inscription which does not match the inscription on image of the 20 Krajcar coin. I took the pictures of my coin which I believe is the correct one.
So can I replace it in the edit and it will automatically create a modification request or do I have to create the request by myself in the forum. Also, what is the recommended quality of the images for coins? (dpi, dimensions, file size, file format?)

Thanks,

Jaro
Can anyone tell me how to enter a date as BCE? I tried to add letters and formatting prevented it
Quote: "sifriedlander"Can anyone tell me how to enter a date as BCE? I tried to add letters and formatting prevented it
You put a negative sign before the date. For example, 20 BCE would be -20.

However, please ask in the relevant forum section next time by creating a new topic.
Hi, I've never added photos to a page before, but I might have the chance:
I saw two pages of coins that I own have photos that appeared to be the "official" photos of a coin taken from the official announcement of the release of the coin - not an actual picture of a real coin. Those pictures have been removed from the page, and it is now looking for new photos. I have real photos of the real coin, but I'm not sure if anything would pass the "legal requirements" (copyright permission etc..). What would I need to have my photos allowed?
Hopefully pictures are from one of these ...
https://en.numista.com/info.php
but pictures you made yourself are preferable.
PM sent to you ZacUK, thanks
