Hey guys,
What is your most favorite monarch design? I'm sure a lot of you would argue that Victoria's "Gothic florin" portrait is the best, but I think that there are some even better ones.
One of my favorites is of
Alfonso XIII's second portrait.

For me Victoria's portrait on the Indian coins (I think may be same as gothic)
Edward and George V imperial designs are the best but I also really like GVI and EII wearing the imperial crown too !

I love that one!
Too bad they didn't make an official coin with his portrait. All they made of Edward VIII were fantasies and coins without his portrait.

Nothing against beatrix, its just that whoever came up with that must have been at a special kind of Dutch CAFE?
I've nothing against my Queen as well, but that portrait is just very ugly. The portrait of her on our Eurocoins is the full version of Ninaber's portait from our Gulden-coinage.

But this one is even worse:

I think both portraits are offensive to Beatrix. My prospects for the portrait of our new King Willem-Alexander aren't very positve.

Certainly a lot better!
Luckily, the portraits of those French monarchs don't have the shapes of ice cubes!

Perhaps that last one is not a queen (I thought it was), though it does say 'crowned head right'. The same design is used on a 2012 coin re-issued. When Latvia join the Euro there are two designs already made, for the 1 Euro (left) and 2 Euro (right). I do not collect Euros but would want these two ...

I agree about the offensiveness of the Beatrix coinage. In fact, I showed a friend of mine one of my Queen Beatrix coins, and he asked me if it was a joke. It's unfortunate King Willem-Alexander will probably have a stupid portrait too. But, at least it isn't as bad as Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg!

It's been a long time since the last post, but no one mentioned the Kaiser, especially on Germany's East African coins.

Man I can't stop marveling at that portrait. Unfortunately the coins are quite rare and very expensive, so no Wilhelm II for me

I think we should consider that the woman on the Polish coins of the 1930s is not Queen or King Jadwiga. Early numismatic literature calls the image that of Polonia...really no different than Marienne on french coinage, Britanna on UK coinage, Liberty on US coinage. I read a description of radiant headed Queen Jadwiga and had to laugh. Those are not rays, but grain heads of wheat. The contributors of the catalog really got that one wrong.
