In this topic car-enthusiastic Numista members can discuss anything about cars. What car do you drive, what's your favorite car, anything can be discussed! :)

Personally, I'm a huge fan of these:

It's the East-German build Trabant 601. These were build between the late 50s and early 90s. I really like these because of the way the look and more importantly, the interesting history they have.

Currently driving a company car boring Mercedes Benz C200 (W203).

My dream car is the Alfa Romeo Montreal

That's a funny coincidence, because that Alfa is my dream car too! It's such a beautiful car, only trouble is that parts are nearly impossible to obtain...

I rarely use my motorcycle because I prefer public transport but anyways here it is:

It's not a car but whatever.

My dream car would be Maybach Exelero.

My favourite German 'car'.

My first car was like this ...

a light blue Hillman Imp, with the aluminium engine in the back.

Only had two cars ever, and this was like the second ...

a white Ford Capri, with the 'power bulge' in the bonnet.

I always liked the Lamborghini Countach (pronounced Coontash) ...

but too expensive and didn't know at the time where to get one in UK.
Oh I've been a car enthusiast long before arthritis sent me in the coin direction !

ive had multiple cars that I've "modified" made to look better
I like that Imp a lot! :) It's such a cute little car and especially when modified it can look really cool. Though I like that Capri too, it has a nice sporty-aggressive look. Needless to say, you have a great taste in cars! :)

I'll dig them out when I get home. Some of them look awful now but I thought they were great when I had them ha !

if a Riley Elf came up for the right price I could be swayed to take one over the mini for the curiosity factor !
I have had several cars since being able to drive.

My my first and only car I paid for myself in the Netherlands was a Fiat Panda.

in the US I have had:

VW 2003 New Beetle
VW 2003 New Beetle Turbo S (favorite)
Ford Taurus
Kia Sportage (current)
Nissan Maxima 2002 ( current)

also so used to have an Aprillia SR50 scooter. Loved drive that around town.
  1. 1991 Mazda 626 - tiny Japanese car. Got it after graduating from college. It was already 8 or 9 years old at that point. Totaled after a little over 3 months - front end collision (I swear, that light post tried to cross the road right in front of me!) - walked away without a scratch
  2. 1996 Pontiac Grand Am Coupe LE - Your basic American car. Cheap. Gets you from point A to point B. Big doors were kinda nice. This one lasted a couple years, but alas, met the same fate - totaled after a driver side collision. Had to get out thru the passenger door, but not a scratch on me
  3. 1998 Pontiac Grand Am Sedan SE - Pretty much the same as above. Gave away after driving it for 11 years. Probably spent about $1500-2000 on repairs over that period, which I think was very lucky, considering the overall quality of American cars.
  4. 2012 Toyota Camry XLE - My 1st new car. At first, I was thinking about possibly getting an Avalon, but they made the Camry XLE so nice, there was little value in going up to the luxury model. Nice, comfortable car. I don't drive much (my commute to work is only 3 miles), so after 4 years, there's only 18k miles on it and other than some paint chipping off the muffler, it still looks like new. Haven't had any problems with it yet.
HoH
Two of my favourite cars:

Anyone else is rally fan? :D
1. Chrysler Neon - first car; not so bad considering. got rid of it as it drank fuel
2. Peugeot 206 roland garros 1.6 - Loved this little car, unfortunately it developed a gearbox problem, so was best part exchanging before it got too bad.
3. BMW330D E46 Touring - Probably still my favourite car. Had to get rid of it due to financial reasons
4. Jeep Cherokee 1994 - Hated this, and got rid of it asap.
5. Mercedes CLK320 - First ever accident, and totalled it :( - Loved this car 2nd after the bmw

After the accident I got a little nervous with long range driving, so replaced it with a cheap car and an awesome bicycle:

1. Vauxhall Signum 2.2 Elite
2. Cube Elite Hybrid (Bosch performance line)

So if you see a maniac riding around at 40mph on a pushbike, that could be me.

Depending how rural I move, my next car will be a suzuki xcross or a skoda superb probably.

How strange a coincidence. My second car was also a Ford Capri 2.0s, but mine was Sirius Red. I think it was the best car I've ever owned and it was certainly great to drive.

We have a Jaguar and a Jeep right now, made the last payment back in June so we're enjoying a payment holiday for a while. Once my darlin' wife decides to retire and we only need to have one vehicle we will get a pick up truck. I don't care for the silly monster tyres and jacked up suspensions, why raise the centre of gravity on a four wheel drive vehicle? It's almost as silly as the blokes who spend $70,000 on a truck and use it as a car. I swear I know a guy who has such a vehicle but hired another one to pick up a load of gravel because he didn't want to mess up his paintwork. A pick up is a working vehicle, not for posing with outside of Starbucks with your caramel drizzled latte.

I'm undecided between a new(ish) F250 sized with a crew cab or buying an old warhorse from the 60s or 70s. As we will be pretty isolated it would make sense to have a 2nd vehicle in case of breakdowns. Something cheap and cheerful and old enough to qualify for the reduced tags and insurance as an antique. We're thinking of an old VW Beetle, older the better. A Morris Traveller or even a Land Rover are possible but very hard to find here.

Or I could get a Harley......

90's Hilux. Can't go wrong.
pnightintale, you should get an old VW Beetle. They are very reliable cars. easy to work on and parts are cheap. Also, they are air-cooled cars so you won't have your car getting overheated like any of the big 'ol 'Murican cars! ;-)

I'm not really a car enthusiast, our cars have always just been ones that are economical and big enough to fit our family. At the moment we're driving a Toyota Platz

When the kids have moved out and we can get away with a smaller car I'd like to get a mini or VW beetle. I just love the rounded shape of them, and they're easy to park. I guess it's from my childhood of watching "Goodbye pork pie" and "Herbie the love bug"

My wife and I have three cars ..... these are 2 of them .....

The one on the left I am sure you all know what it is .... That is the wife's car.

The one on the right is not available in the USA or Europe.... That is my car.

It is an FPV FG MkII GT 5.0 litre supercharged V8
It has 335 Kilowats of power (455 Horsepower)
It is made by Ford Australia and is based on the Ford Falcon bodyshell
FPV stands for Ford Performance Vehicles.

I had the 22B in 1999 for a year, I had number 465 of 500. 350bhp with brutal acceleration and grips like it is on rails. Had fun with the slip diff.

I almost got the Noble M12 after but didn't have the balls for it. Test drive scared me to hell, especially spinning in 5th gear without breaking a sweat. Never thought a Frankenstein butchered Ford Mondeo mash up would freak me out but the M12 did it.

Then moved to spain and bought a few little cars to get around as roads were brutal for 99% of sports cars, bumps and holes everywhere.

My first car was Mk3 escort XR3i, then white Mk3 Escort RS Turbo with Mk4 alloys, loved the classic look behind it.

Seems we have something else in common, my friend:

1. 1972 MkI facelift 1600XL in green - totalled (my fault)
2. 1974 MkI facelift 1600GT in red with black vinyl/sunroof (absolutely gorgeous) - totalled (his fault)
3. 1971 MkI pre-facelift 1600GT in yellow - drove into ground, sold for scrap
4. 1979 MkIII 2.0 Ghia in blue with high lift cam and GT exhaust - loved this one to bits but sold dirt cheap to fund my move to Southern California.

After that, transport in So. Cal. became quite interesting and varied but that's for another post.

Edit: Here is number 1 before (approx '82, don't laugh!) ...

... and here is number 2 after (March '84)

Made the local papers and everything! I don't think I've got any of no. 3 but loads of no. 4, I'll see if I can dig one out.

Awesome pics, Radrick! I really like those Capri's you hardly see them on the road these days... I both love the mk. 1 and mk. 2 but for different reasons. For the mk. 1 I like the fastback-look a lot, especially the sideview of those cars amazes me. For the mk. 2 I like the front a lot, it has a very cool classic-aggressive look and I suspect most of the motorists will probably let you go pass them when they see that front nose in their mirrors! :O

Like diplomatic staff, with the Ambassador I used this Cadillac Fleetwood of the Embassy to pick up Ministers and VIP's in visit in WDC. Sometimes we had police motorcycle escorts flashing and horning just ahead this limousine to open the route in priority off car traffic. No stops, no traffic red lights for us ...

I know this is an old post but, I thought it was somewhat appropriate.

In the 1990's, I spent some time cash cropping with a friend and he sold the farm about a decade ago. To pursue his passion, drag racing.

Here are pics of his 1955 Chevrolet station wagon. As you can see from the license plate, this is his "Labb Rat" for twin turbo charged engines.

This car is street legal with 2200 Hp. In a nutshell, it can rip the tires off the back if you're not careful.

This recently resulted in a 3rd place finish at the biggest East Coast meet in North America!! In a nutshell, 0 to 252 mph in 5.87 seconds. He lost to a "girl" by 44/1000's of a second.

His team mate, Wes Goddard, is driving the "Land Shark" in the semi's (9:17:00) in this link.http://livestream.com/BangShiftLIVE/shakedown2016

Personally, I link going the speed limit.

Enjoy

Awesome! Coincidently, my dad is also into dragracing. :-) Sadly we don't have many of those cool old American classics over here, so he used his 1975 VW Beetle for dragracing. His main goal is to reach 11 seconds on the quarter mile track, hopefully he'll make it! :)

I've been trying to recall the vehicles I've owned ever since I got my provisional licence way back in the mists of time.

Vespa 75cc, I bought it brand new and it was my sole form of transport for many years. Licence plate was VEN 944 L.

Datsun 100 A, I finally gave up my Vespa fot a 125cc Suzuki but that was short lived and quickly wrecked. By this time I had a wife to join my mother in nagging at me to get a safer way of getting around. So with some reluctance and a degree of good grace I accepted my mothers old car, a Datsun 100A which was a real rust bucket with a great engine. My wife and I took it apart, replaced everything which showed any kind of wear, sealed the floor pan with bright blue rubber pool paint and resprayed it panel by panel. By the time we had finished it was very much "our" car. Licence plate was HTE 603 N.

Mark III Ford Capri 2.0s. The best car I've ever owned. It coincided with that great period where you've furnished the house, already started climbing the property ladder and you have two decent incomes and no kids. It never lasts.

Mark IV Cortina. It's got four doors so we can get an ever growing brood of kids in and out. It's boring, middle aged and I don't like it.

From this point forward I'm spending most of my time abroad so I don't need a car. My wife has a Renault Clio which despite being a "girlie" car is quite fun to drive.

Plymouth Duster - my first American car, we bought it for $600. One headlight was pointing up into the night sky. After 9/11 we installed two full sized US flags at each rear quarter and "Arise America" on the back bumper. We gave it away eventually to someone in need of a car.

Oldsmobile 88. Bought it in Ohio for $3,000 and it served us well for many, many years. Made the trip to Florida and back many times.

Chrysler Sebring. You have to have a convertible in Florida. We bought it with only 2,000 miles on the clock and kept it for five years. During that time we were rear ended while stopped at a red light... twice. Side swiped by a drunk and had a construction truck reverse over the front end. That car was cursed.

Dodge Dakota. As we had bought a large run down house which hadn't been touched since the 1950s we needed a pick up truck to move the building materials around. We ran that poor truck into the ground but luckily one of the local crackheads reversed out in front of me and so we got a very profitable insurance write off.

Jeep Liberty. My wifie's car. She feels safer being higher up and with some good American steel between her and the crazy Florida drivers.

Jaguar x series. My car. A sleek black beastie. I always wanted a Jag so I bought one. Abby calls it "The stinky car" since she left a cup of milk under the passenger seat until it curdled.

Next up is a large pick up with a crew cab and probably a vintage VW Beetle for weekends.

I cant drive !!!
It is something that never appealed to me ( I was a sport nut who ran or walked everywhere ) and the older I get the more daunting the thought of trying to learn becomes B.
I have honestly only sat behind the wheel twice in my whole life.
Once on top of a supermarket car park, screaming the nuts off of a Fiesta " pop " until I tried to change gear and stalled it.
Next time on holiday in Ireland and I got about 100 yards, had a panic attack, stalled it, got out :snif:

My childhood however is full of memories regarding a gentleman who lived up the road from us and his hobby was re-building old MG classic cars, wooden frames and all that !!!
There are cars in museums and private collections all over the world that he has built, pretty sure 1 is in Chicago.
The last time I spoke to him he had just turned down an all expenses trip to Australia because his wife wont fly, a collector wanted his cars servicing and was willing to pay whatever it cost to get him there, now that's saying something.
All of this from a man that was born with a deformity of the fingers and toes, he only had up to the first knuckle & the same with his toes.
He is still alive ( about 80 now ) and I know he still drives around in an old blue open top MG, I will do my best to get some pictures the next time I visit the folks.
Not MY cars but my CAR memories.
I deny nothing but doubt everything, opinions are made to be changed, how else is the truth to be gotten at.
Hi! I drive my baby fiat 500 2011. To college too, but not every day, because it's expensive (I'm a student) and not environmentally friendly. However, I'd like to have a really vintage fiat 1972, but I believe, the 2011 is safer and maintenance easier.

Actually I was quite surprised to see I new post, didn't expect anyone would find this topic again! Glad to see people are still interested in car stories. :) Anyway, some years have passed and I finally acquired my driver's license. I also had some spare cash left so I got myself my first ride! It isn't the Trabbie that I was originally planning to buy, but it's still a nice old vintage communist car. :)

This is what I got, a 1972 Skoda S100. These were build in socialist Czechoslovakia, mine was delivered in Romania back in the '70s and after serving there for roughly 40 years, it was exported to the Netherlands. In those years it drove around Romania (it's from the province of Bihor to be precise, hence the 'BH' in the license plate), it only had two owners!
The car wasn't in driving condition (currently still isn't :P), but I got it running and driving a few weeks ago. Basically starts and runs, but I needed to take some crucial parts out (heater and disc brake) to repair, because they didn't work properly. Need to get MOT somehow, right?! Anyway, here are some pics:

Funny my big boy Tonka toy is a jeep Cherokee country 1993.And odd ball like me a 2 door one, country. But has a strait 6 , no air bags. Has a distributor and rotor. Just old school. nothing fancy. But always needs something.
It is, what it is, or is it.
This was what I thought was my first car. It was a car that my father's garage with a mechanic's lien on it. Before my father would let me have a car, I had to completely rebuild all of the mechanical and electrical components of the car. Came home from high school one day and the car was gone. He had sold to someone that wanted to make a dragster out of it. '35 English Ford Anglia ..

Then he threw me the keys to this. Ditto, three months later, gone .. Austin Healy Bugeyed Sprite

My mother usually kept out of any situations between my father and the boys, but she stepped in on this one. Raised a whole field of Kane with my father .. after about a week of her riding his posterior about what he had done to me with the cars, he relented with this one and registered in my name ... BUT, had to fix is myself.. '65 544 Volvo ...

The pictures are not of my actual cars, but look almost exactly like them ...

Ah, my first car I owned was a black 1996 Ford Mustang GT. It was a V8 stick shift and was so much fun to drive in high school. I do miss that car and will hopefully get another Mustang when I'm further in my career.

Before we bought our current Mini we did look at few minis similar to yours and almost bought one off Ebay (2007 Mini Cooper in Greenish brown).

But we settled we our 2015 blue body and white roof with the rare cream leather option, plus it was low mileage around 7-8,000ish and the last digits on the plate was BS which you know what is means.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Dreaming about

I have still got this beast, it is 8 years old now and only has 23,000 Ks on the clock. It is actually worth double what I paid for it now due to its rarity and enthusiast value. I'm thinking of cashing in on it. Petrol here is around AU$1.75 a litre and this beast uses a lot of it. She is a beautiful car to drive but I would like to keep my driving licence and with 5 litres of supercharged V8 grunt it is very easy to attract the attention of law enforcement.
