Mexico 2 Reales - Carlos IV 1795 [solved]

5 posts
Hi All,
I have this coin and I am trying to determine if I found the correct one in the catalog. I have a few questions about it.
  1. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces41352.html is this my coin?
  2. Whats with the date? the "95" looks really odd.
  3. Is it real? Probably should be the first question....lol

A few images below.

I found this page on coin facts wiki with another 1795 coin and the date seems to have the same deal

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Your coin is from Peru, not Mexico.

It seems real to me.
I collect coins and tokens which circulated in Africa from 18th century to 2000. I sell about 7000 illustrated world coins from http://www.avscoins.com.
I have the same coin but from 1794, (I had the same problem with Peru and Mexico). On the coin it shows, after ".HISPAN. ET IND. REX." it shows "MAE". This is the mint name for Lima (Limae). After there is a "2 R" (2 Reales).
Thanks both for your replies. Was very helpful.

And if your coin should be from Mexico there would be FM after the 2R in 1795. On your coin it's IJ after the 2R. Another way to see it's not from Mexico.

More countries besides Mexico and Peru use similar coins so always look at the mintmark (after REX) and at the letters (after 2R) if the mintmark is not readable anymore:

Also Colombia although not with the date 1795: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces61390.html
