I bought few coins at the bakery with a 10€ bank note this morning. They even gave me a baguette and some pastries :wiz:

- France : 2 euros 2001
- France : 20 cents 2007
- France : 1 cent 2014
- Australia : 2 euros 2002 (rare, I didn't know they were circulated in the European Union !).
- And an unknown 50 cents coin with a music instrument on it : if someone has an idea about what it could be (the one on the bottom left).

Sorry for the bad picture, I broke my camera few days ago so I had to use my old phone.

Hi, save some money for a better camera (instead of buying pastries). If you want us to confirm the authenticity of your Australian €2 coin, please also provide weight, width and height of the coin ... also, did you do the kangaroo-test with a magnet?

Please also provide better pictures once you have a new camera, because I think you might have a coin with a very RARE portrait of Elizabeth II with veil.

Oh! And do read my profile page before you open a swap ...
Well I technically got these in late March, but I didn't get around to cataloguing them in my collection until today because I have a degree in procrastination. :8D

A nice big copper 5 Baiocchi from the Papal States, these are nearly the exact same size as the British Soho Mint cartwheel tuppences!

A lustrous UNC 2 centimes from the Congo Free State, my first coin from this issuer!

Very worn, but surprisingly good detail on the arms for this type- a ND 15 Réis copper coin issued for Portuguese India from roughly 1798-1816. I'm the first Numista member to own this coin and I'm considering replacing the page's pic with mine!

For just 2 euros, a 2 Lepta from the Ionian Islands!

British Honduras is always a good issuer! This 1939 10 cents I found in the same 2 euro bin as the Greek coin above, and it has a low mintage of just 20k.

I open the month with another silver classic from Australia.

This 1927 Canberra Florin in decent EF/AU with some amazing toning. I have had this coin in the past, but never this nice or with such nice toning.

I love coins
This week was a lucky one for me. My local dealer has a tray of random coins he sells for cheap and one of silver coins he sells for weight, little above melt. Went there and he had some pretty cool ones!
This is what I got:

The top right and left center were cool in that they were missing from my portuguese collection so got to advance it a bit more. Love the 20 franc one, couldn't pass up the opportunity! The bottom two are from the first half of the 1800's. In pretty bad shape but for the price, why not? 8)
Got my order from the US mint partially delivered. Waiting for the big one :)

In the case of the countermarked coin, the grade of the countermark matters more than the grade of the host coin. This one seems to be in at least F or F+ condition.

However, I don't think we can know who or what GCP was. It is likely a merchant's countermark, and a good quality one. It is not impossible that it was an official countermark, but one would expect others to have been recorded since a state or official board would likely c/m hundreds or thousands of coins, not just a handful.

Note that this c/m is not recorded in Greg Brunk's 2003 book, Merchant and Privately Countermarked Coins.

The counter mark is actually from the Porto Civil Government, who marked many 1 pataco coins to make them legal tender again after some revolution in the north of Portugal. There are many many coins marked like this so it's not particularly scarce but I am glad I have one now! Also it might not be in the book you referenced for the fact it was actually counter marked by a public institution

Exactly. Brunk's book is about private countermarks. I have just now done a quick research and indeed this is attested on other coins, for example this 40 réis on Colnect.

'Scarce base metal Medallion - King George III's visit to St. Paul's Cathedral 1789' [33mm]
This is one of the most interesting medallions of the lot. It is from King George's madness in 1788/89 (Almost certainly a symptom of Porphyria and or bipolar) and the madness almost led to the King abdicating and the Prince Regent (Later George IV) taking over as ruler. In the spring of 1789 he seemingly recovered and thanked God through this service at St Paul's. It was not the last time, he went mad, doing so again in 1800 and 1806 when Queen Charlotte died. He basically stopped direct rule in 1811 and spent his last 10 years at Windsor dying of his madness in 1820.

The movie from 1994 "The Madness of King George" starring Nigel Hawthorne as the King is an excellent depiction of this - thanks for sharing this historically important piece!

Got some nice historical stuff again, mostly from Great Britain:

1 Groat 1560-61 minted under the rule of Elizabeth I, my first coin from her rule and of the Tudor dynasty:

And some tokens commemorating 2x Queen Anne doing stuff with Louis XIV, George II Coronation, George IVs visit to Scotland and the death of his daughter Princess Charlotte:

And at last this nice big medal made after the death of Emperor Friedrich III:

Thank you! Most interesting.
more 20th century Monaco. I am closing in on a complete set of Monaco new francs. Some of these are 'scarce'.

1976 10 franc - mintage 16000, 1989 1/2 franc - mintage 10000
1977 1/2 franc - mintage 62500, 1986 1 franc - mintage 50000

The 1986 1 franc is particularly ellusive, I have never seen one for sale 'raw'. I have however discovered that a number of them were issued in a 'Münz Brief', also can be found listed as 'numis lettre'. There are many, many of these, from dozens of countries, to be had for small money. I was quite pleased to find that the 1986 Monaco Münz Brief has a BU 1 franc coin in it. :wiz:. It is also interesting that in 1986, the only denomination issued by Monaco was the 1 franc.

The stamp is quite nice also.

Also technically acquisitions from last month, but I just got them identified and added to my Numista collection (and the site), so here they are!

The first is a coin from 1748, minted by Crimea; but the second coin is more interesting, an anonymous Pul from the Beylik of Menteshe in southwestern Anatolia (at least according to the Islamic states referee). Both gave me new issuers!
One last group of additions for a while

The last one is a tricky one. For me, it was minted in an anatolian beylik as well.

these 20c. are interesting. The newer ones are struck over the older types, and you can see the remains of the reeded edge on some of them.

they are all copper-nickel, I don't know why the 1919 one looks brown like bronze, you can see the light color peeking through some nicks and dents.

Finally some quite nice middle-grade silver pieces

My first actual addition to my collection in April! :wiz:

This is a commemorative 2 Gulden from Austria minted in 1854 to commemorate Emperor Franz Joseph's marriage to Elizabeth of Bavaria, better known today as "Sisi". I already had the 2 Gulden minted in 1873 for their marriage's silver Jubilee, so I've been looking for this for some time now- and I finally found one I could afford!

It was 40 euro from the US, excluding shipping- and even though it's well worn, these coins are easily some hundreds of euros in XF (which most of them are considering it was non-circulating), so I'm just really happy to have this type in my collection at all. :8D

A Dutch collector friend has addicted me to Dutch coins, and I'm now rushing to complete my post-1815 Dutch type set before he does. This is the first of several guldens and 1/2 guldens that are on their way!

And two nice silvers from the Russian Empire. My collection of Tsarist silver is pitiful, so hopefully that'll change soon! I got a nice price for the second coin too- under half of the median price they are on Ebay.

'King William IV 1834 50th birthday coin'

'Medal to commemorate the marriage of Duke of York and Princess May of Teck 1893'
It may be for something else as King William IV was born in 1765, and would have been 69 in 1834. He was the 3rd son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, and had the title "Duke of Clarence", he was not considered King material at all given how long his dad hung on and then his brother. The other obstacle to the throne, was his middle brother Frederick Duke of York (1763 - 1827), who was next in line after George IV. His sudden death in January 1827 (After a speech in which he cursed out the Catholic Emancipation movement led by the Duke of Wellington) placed William in line for the throne as by 1827, George IV was sickly and had proper heirs (Both Kings had numerous love children by Catholic mistresses) and William's marriage to Adelaide, was loving but childless.

William only became king at the age of 65 and was not in great health, he was really a caretaker king until Princess Victoria came of age. However he was a good one known for the Emancipation act (He supported it) and the 1832 Reform act which got rid of rotten boroughs and made elections transparent. Other acts in his short reign, freed slaves, got rid of executions, took the death penalty off buggerers, started a standardised poor relief system with workhouses and by far the best - the Births, Deaths and Marriage register which means anyone English can get a birth, death or marriage certificate going back to 1836!

I love your British stamps though, I have a complete collection (Except PUC £1 and all 10/- up stamps before 1939) from 1887 to 2007. It is good to get these without nasty pen or marker cancels as Royal Mail has a habit of doing. None of these sets are scarce, but it is nice to have them, so early 80s designs were very nice unlike the wallpaper churned out RM today.

Yes I see now that 1815 would be the date for a 50th birthday; just now seen on a German forum
that it (and other denominations) were used in schools ...
https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.numismatikforum.de/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D63%26t%3D59261&prev=search

Translated as something like each student was given say 200 'merits' face value of these tokens at beginning of the term, then from that either paid fines, or got more tokens for good deeds. Not sure what they were spent on. Larger schools had their own name on, so this token was probably from a smaller school.

Thanks to JustforFun I received today four coins from sellers that do not ship outside the US. One of the most historically significant is this one:

Clench was a furniture maker in Cobourg, Ontario. In July 2018 I posted an 1853 "rays around eagle" quarter with a T.B. CLENCH countermark (shown in the 4th picture). This time it's an 1853 O half of exactly the same type. As you can see in the excerpt from Brunk's catalogue, this date was so far unattested for both the quarter and the half.

One of the three other coins is a DEVINS & BOLTON MONTREAL countermark with a W. N. countermark on top.

So a big "thank you" to JustforFun. Numista is a great place!

Finally, a new addition to my Chinese silver collection! This time it's a 1909 dated (AH 1327) 5 Miscals coin from Xinjiang province:

And also a lowball 2nd bust WIlhelmina half guilder for the Dutch type set (bidding on its equivalent rijksdaalder right now!):

Finally, a 1745 LIMA shilling that I got for just £7:

Hungarian 12th century bowl shaped coin. There are only 2 Hungarian copper coin types from 10th to 17th century, this one and EH#115. At that time, many Arab and Byzantine coins circulated in the kingdom. This coin is an imitation of Byzantine coinage, unlike the other, which is of clear Arabic inspiration. I already had the other one, with this I completed the pair. :)

Now current problem is how to store it, I usually put my coins into 2x2 flips and then into my coin album but the coin being bowl shaped I might need to store it some other way.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
I got a half dozen coins this evening, the second silver worths highlighting, a super nice Victoria florin of 1901.
The other 5 are: Italy silver 2 lire 1884, German 10 pfennig 1908, Brazil 5 réis 1773, Austria 1 kreuzer 1878 and Ceylon 5 cents 1944.

Also found an old book, a 1944 edition of "Dom Quixote das Crianças" (Don Quixote for Children), one of the "Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo" / "The Yellow Woodpecker Farm" books.
Two more additions ...

'Germany (Nürnberg) - RechenPfennig, c. 19th Century' [Diane]

[LVD XVI D G FR ET NAV R // RECHPFENN / E L S L]

'1893 Medal: Marriage of Duke of York & Victoria Mary of Teck'

[JULY 6TH 1893]
Been a very sparse month for me and managed to pick up this pile of mostly junk today.

The only thing interesting was a 1966 Canadian silver voyageur dollar on a stainless steel chain. The coin seems a little late for dress jewellery (Usually Maria Theresa thalers and gold sovereigns), I am seriously thinking of wearing it.

The rest was mostly junk, some 1900s pennies, Samoan low values, 3 yuan, 100 Yen Japanese and 60 cents in US change. It has really been that bad this month:Zz:

The medal is a cheapie Aluminum pin thing for Fiji's independence in 1970.
I love coins
France issued dozens of commemorative 100 franc coins on this silver 31mm 15g module in the 80s and 90s.
Monaco issued four different ones on the same module.

I posted the other two recently in the common planchets thread.

There are two ways you can store these coins:

1) In a clear plastic, round coin holders or
2) Use a 2.5x2.5 coin flip instead. It gives it more room

either method is fine and will not fit in a coin album (and it shouldn't be in it anyway)....
