Two additions for me ...

'Unusual 1562 Nuremberg Jeton - Sea Horse Boat'

[DOMINE ALVA NOS PERIMVS // IN MARI VIA TVA ET SEMITAE TVAE IN AQVIS MVL]

'Jeton - Medieval - lion Rampant 15th c ???'

When it arrives will take it out of the holder, for better pictures. No idea what it could be.

Also, from that topic, both those items (from different sellers) arrived today. The second item
was again from the seller who I already made two purchases from last month,
and both of those had old unused stamps on. Here is what that 1893 medal came in today ...

Will look up what those seven stamps are and their dates ...

34p - Royal Mail - 350 Years of Service [1985]
34p - Sir Galahad [Arthurian Legends - 1985]

31p - World Student Games 1991 [Sport]
31p - By Tram / C E P T Europa [Transport and Communications - 1988]
31p - Tennis [Sport - 1988]
31p - Richard Davies [The Welsh Bible 1588-1988]

12p - Liverpool and Manchester Railway 1830 [150th Anniversary - 1980]

Usually I wait until the end of the week to post my additions, but these two early milled halfcrowns arrived and I got excited. :8D

Both I won well under catalogue value; the 1689 is ex-mount but I don't really mind, and the 1696 has an interesting lamination error under the dare.
An orgy of shopping at the coin shop in Wellington, a little pricey but a great range and a birthday treat (43).
I bought all these on April 30, but only got home today on May 2 and more of you may see them here!.

3 Conders (1812 Birmingham workhouse, 1789 Macclesfield Honey, 1792 Coalbrookdale)
All Very Good to Fine, rather than the Poors I had.
Russian 3 Kopeck (1880) and 1 Kopeck (1911)

Irish Shillings and Florins and a Russian Lenin Rouble, along with a Cyprus 5 cent piece.

And now the silver coins!(8

Top row L to R 1946 British Florin, 1897 ZAR Half crown, 1849 Godless Florin
Middle - German 5 mark 1966 Hamburg Mint (Silver)
Bottom - French 2 Franc silver 1916, Russian 1861 10 Kopecks (Damaged), 1757 GB Sixpence (New oldest coin:8D) - with solder.

Close ups

1757 6d, this only cost $10 thanks to Solder plug, it is at least in Fine condition

1849 Godless Florin - worn but at least complete, not damaged and a superb first issue, apparently Victoria was not amused for it lacked "Fidei Difensor" on the obverse. In 1851 this was rectified. 1849 is the only year it was issued (Although patterns dated 1848 exist)

1897 Zuid Afrikanse Republiek Half Crown - This stunning VF+ coin was the best one I bought and most expensive ($35), but I have always wanted some Boer coinage and this is a good entry piece (A gold Pond being the ultimate goal or at least the Crown).

Thank you for your efforts. :)
It arrived today, and really only the lion side can be seen. That side is ...

though it looks more like it is walking, than standing on back legs.

Then the other, orientated two ways as unsure which it should be ...

The diameter is 26mm and I have no scales so weight unknown.

EDIT - Maybe it should be 'Coin alignment' as holding it at an angle it
looks like it may be a castle on there. No letters can be made out either side.
< above ... angle >
A lot of stuff arrived today as well. :8D

First off, these silvers:

Two French silver denominations I won for well under book value; the latter, a 1831 B 2 Francs, only has a mintage of 49k!

My 8th Weimar commemorative 3 RM this year!

For my Dutch type set, which is progressing massively! The 1/2 guldens were just 4 euro each, and I won the 1898 rijksdaalder just now at a very good price as well. ;)

A nicely preserved Fookien dragon- much scarcer than its Kwangtung counterpart. And speaking of Chinese coins....

A nicely patina-ed Szechuan military dollar that I posted on Insta! This is my third Chinese Reublican dollar this year, and I'm getting a Yuan Shikai from a friend too.

And finally some coins from a swap with Finland.

Finally got a centennial half-crown

An inch closer to my New Zealand date set!
Jimpop - same thing, I don't speak Latin and are not religious being a 43 year old socialist and free thinker.

Anyway against my socialist creed, is my latest purchase, I have been mulling over this for 2 and 3 months and finally made the guy a deal, if it did not sell, I would buy it off him at the start of May. Well here it is.

It's a South African 1953 Proof set of 11 coins including all the values from ¼d to £1! Most of the time, these are short sets with 9 coins only (No Gold) or the 11 coin set with the 2 gold coins gone, possibly sold for melt or other reasons (Loose gold coins are quite common on line from these years and apart from 1959/1960 only proofs were issued.

This set also contains 2 GOLD coins

The gold £1 and its half are the same size and weight as a Gold sovereign and its half (Same purity), but with only a mintage of 4,000 coins each, much rarer. These coins are in stunning proof condition and are not tarnished or blackened like the rest of the coins. They are my 2nd and 3rd gold pieces and the £1 is the first non half sovereign and my biggest gold coin so far (Not saying much) and I don't expect to add more GOLD for a while.

The rest of the set is still uncirculated proofs, but clearly covered in fingerprints and black spots as they have been stored in that tired case since 1953. The man who sold them to me, said he bought them in the 1980s for a lot more than what he sold them to me for and seemed to be glad to get rid of them.

The Half Crown and Florin are particularly tarnished, but the Copper coins are decent (Especially the farthing), and the shilling and 3 pence are the best of the lot after the Gold coins. I like the Crown too, just a big coin - sadly the silver is only 50% fine as in 1950 South Africa dropped the silver content from 80% to 50%.

Even better was only 5k was made of each coin except the florin had 6k made and this was the largest mintage of these sets! The 1958 to 1960 sets were in the hundreds. I collect South African coins and stamps (My 1913 £1 stamp mint is actually worth more than the gold coin!)

Still I paid well below 4 figures for this (About 20% over the gold value for it all), and its my best coin buy to date!.

Hello,

Two new entries in my collection.
1 kreuzer Leopold I from Hall in Tyrol, the one with Maltese type of crosses. The obverse is a bit worn but the reverse is nice.

And a groschen/3 kreuzer for Styria minted in Graz in 1607 under Ferdinand II - grand son of Ferdinand I - when he was not yet Emperor but Archduke of Inner Austria (Styria, Carinthia, Carniola):

Not quite on the level of the Proof set, is this relatively cheap and interesting selection of coins from Mauritius.

These coins are all modern and base metal, but are an interesting overview. I collect the stamps of Mauritius and have always wanted a few coins to go with them. There is a good range of values here from 5 cents to 20 Rupees and my guess is the 1 Rupee is a widely used coins. All are 1980s to 2008, however the large rupee is dated 1971 and still has QE2 on the back. The rest have Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.

It is also a new country for me and takes me to 87 countries (They did not count ZAR as a separate country).

Definitely one I want to add to my rouble collection. The coin shows Nicholas II and Mikhail Romanov who started the dynasty in 1613 when he was pressured into becoming Tzar by the Boyars. His father was made the Patriarch of the church and in reality ruled with him as Mikhail was only 16 when he was made Tzar.

Even better is the set of stamps issued from 1 Kopeck to 10 Roubles showing each Romanov Ruler (Except ones like Ivan6, Constantine and Peter3) and then the Palaces on the Rouble values.

Just some more junque this morning, but its coins.

South African Rand and 50 cents, 100 Yen and some 5 cent pieces of Australia and NZ, British 1p, Singapore 1 and 10c (Old series).

The Rand and 50 cents are actually the first I have of these series (I mean I have gold proof sets and most of the ZAR, Predecimal and post 1990 stuff - IRONY)

The rand is practically New and nice. The 50 cent shows Johannes Jacobus Fouche, as it was the end of his Presidency, another weird aspect of South Africa in Apartheid times, was showing a president only as his term ended!

Nice coin! Coincidentally, my main acquisition for May (just in time for my birthday) was also a 1940 NZ Centennial half crown. I don't have the patience or resources to collect by year but this little beaut filled a nice gap in my type collection. It's never going to be a complete run since I'm never going to possess a Waitangi crown but I am on the lookout for some George VI silver to make it more complete than it is at the moment (here's the first page with it's recent addition):

Incredibly weak strike, but realistically its about VG7 or G6, the rim is complete, but Marianne or whoever the female allegory is, is little more than a silhouette. Still what an exotic coin.:)

The person with the Nprwegian coin - I think someone may have attempted, but did not do very well. The 1931 Australian shilling catalogues $10 alone in Fine, so he/she got a bargain.:wiz:

Yes it is a bummer the Norwegian coin was cleaned. It does have some nice rim toning though:). Do you know the value of it in its present state?
As for the shilling, I didn’t know it would be worth $10 thought it was just junk silver. Thanks for the info. Guess that coin pays for my whole lot.

May is really turning out to be a very fruitful month for me. B)

I got a package from the Netherlands, and in it were these two lovely rijksdaalders I won! They go towards that Dutch type set which nears completion with every passing day:

A 1847 Willem II in superb conservation, and an amazing rainbow toning effect around the rim on the reverse.

And this superb 1898 Wilhelmina 2nd bust! This is a one year issue, with a mintage of just 100,000 (low by 2.5 gulden standards). I won it for just 143 euro, well under book and from what I see they retail in the Netherlands for at least 80 euro more (and sometimes much more)! My favourite Dutch coin.

Happy birthday, sc.rednek! While my birthday is in the Fall, my third Numista birthday is less than three days away.

Countermarks are one of my specialties, but there are many we simply can't identify. Sometimes, though, you just need one person who knows something others don't, and that gets you started. That's why I'm posting here this new acquisition:

This is a high quality countermark, but it certainly is a private countermark even though the crown might lead you to think it's official in some way. This is also a rather late countermark. The "golden age" of Canadian countermarks belongs to about the 1850s to the 1910s.

It is not recorded in Brunk's catalogues and has probably never been published.

1912 Serbia 2 Dinara I got for close to melt- cleaned but can't complain for 5€!

1899 1000 Réis from Portugal, also cleaned (probably) but that mantled arms is just so grand.

And I upgraded my 1937 Coronation Crown too! I don't usually upgrade since I collect by type, and money I spend upgrading one type could be spent on getting another I don't have yet, but my previous one (a touchpiece worn to F, which is now up for swap) was really bad and this one, with a nice gentle golden patina all over, was fairly cheap, so I bought it anyway. Got a free loupe from the dealer as well!

so the lettering I can hopefully make out (see below)
Red = sure / Green = possible / Yellow = a guess
and when it arrives maybe some of the reverse lettering (on ribbon, and elsewhere) could
be made out - though even then not seen a reverse like it - only like the one on that link.
A bit of guilty pleasure, perhaps -

BU 1995 Monaco 20 franc and 20 centime coins, placed in Numis Briefe.
In 1995, every reference says that the only coins of these denominations were 30000 in mint sets.
But here we see that 9500 of the 20 franc pieces and 7000 of the 20 centimes were used for these numis beife. I presume that means there not more than 20500 of the complete sets actually remain in existence.

Another bit of a riddle is the post mark on the Princess Stephanie card, 28-7-1993! did they get the cards postmarked and then wait two years for coins, or were the 1995 mint sets actually available to certain customers in 1993? and why 1993 anyway, Stephanie was born in 1965, so her 30th was in 1995.

Another haul of pieces that interest me off Trade Me.

1988 Australian Parliament $5 coin. Quite common with 3 million made and sold at face value by the Commonwealth bank. The coin was special as it was the first $5 commemorative and despite being the same metal as their $1 and $2 coins, it is crown sized and was not a circulation piece as the first $5 polymer note came out that year also showing new Parliament house. A handsome coin. Uncirculated but lots of marks and dings that you expect on huge coins.

This coin was bought to feed my obsession on huge coins and the fact its a common coin, that someone like me should have and the guy selling it charged barely over facevalue for it.

A weird Prinz item from 2016 promoting a German National Park and showing pictures of it, a weird screen paper map and inscriptions in English and German, yet the coins are a 2016 set of Dutch Eurocoins!

I bought it for 3 reasons
1. There is a bear on the cover and I love bears.
2. My Dutch Eurocoins of Willem Alexander only go down to the 5 Eurocent. A Dutch Princefan sent them to me, when I sent him a used Prince concert ticket!
3. I just love nice coin sets.
I love coins
My final item was a Samoan coin set.

(8

The set dates from 1967 and is their first circulation coins ever. They had used German and British coins previously, then New Zealand ones and when New Zealand went decimal in 1967, so did Samoa and they got their own dollar called a Tala made up of 100 sene (Tala = Dollar and Sene = Cent in Samoan).

The set has a nice essay on the history of coins in Samoa and the set had 7 coins ranging from 1 sene to 1 tala. The Tala is yet another crown sized coin that did not circulate and only had a mintage of 20,000 (15,000 in these sets and 5,000 coins sold loose in plastic holders). The coins 50 sene down circulated, but these are polished proofs and is in nice condition.

All coins are base metal, although precious metal coins started being issued in the 1970s. Like most BC places, the coins were minted at the Royal Mint and sold in Samoa and also New Zealand.

The designs of the 10 sene to 1 Tala are beautiful with a shield and the denomination in Samoan (Tasi le Tala), Sefulu sene etc. The smaller coins have numbers in stars and the coins all have the then head of Samoa - Malietoa Tanumafili II on the back. He lived to nearly 100 years of age dying in the mid 2000s.

Samoa has a Prime Minister and a Head of State called a Tui Tupua and either one of the Kingly families, a Malietoa or a Tamasese. Being a Polynesian, Island culture has always fascinated me.

Just one addition, but it has seven tokens ...

'Seven various tokens'

I added the numbers; I only got them for the large token at the top -
the rest I either already have or do not want.

2. 1797 - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces57275.html [25 mm]
3. 1795 - similar to other spade guinea tokens, but with SIMCOX below portrait
4. 1837 - similar to the 13 varieties on here, except REGINA in different position
5. 1837 - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces100846.html [22 mm]
6. 1839 - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces80893.html [21.27 mm]
7. no date - I already have one, but it is not on here yet [18 mm]

And here I was about to suggest Robert Walpole who was also born in 1676. I noticed Nat, which is indicative of a date of birth and knew the style of wig was 1720s to 1760s so it could not be a 1670s piece (Expect longer wiggs and more lacy collars).

I just bought this adorable letter opener. It is really nicely made, the pommel and guard are silver plated brass, and the tiny shield is very fine quality enamel.

Sadly I no longer own this set and had to sell it for financial reasons.

Thanks - yes, that was the seller's description, so I added my amendment
to it below the images; maybe copper or bronze. Coincidentally, when looking
on the site after I got it, I saw the page ...
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces93993.html
which you created, so you have one also - but was curious why the
description says silver whereas the images look more like gold. Just asking. :)
Yes mine is gilt silver, so gold-plated silver, not sure why I added it just as silver to the catalogue at the time.
I guess most medals of this type are Silver or are Bronze so I was not sure at the time if It would be good to add an additional listing for gold plated silver.
