Numismatic and Medal Collection
The numismatic collections are dual in nature.
The State depository consists of coins and medals, both ancient and modern from all over Europe from the beginning of coinage (6th century BC) to 1813. On the other hand, the original core of the Civic holdings focuses mainly on coins and medals produced in Milan and Lombardy, with only some holdings centred on other areas of Italy and abroad.
The collections were expanded through the purchase or donation of various sets of coins:
- about 9000 pieces from the Late Roman Empire
- around 23.000 imperial Roman coins
- approximately 1200 Greek bronze coins
- around 1701 examples of 4th century Roman coins
- around 1800 Roman coins.

The Gabinetto Numismatico e Medagliere holds an important collection of around 280.000 coins and medals.

In all, the bibliographical collection consists of approximately 35.000 items, including 1125 antique editions. Over 600 periodicals (200 of which are active subscriptions) and serial collections both in print and digital format may be consulted in the Periodicals Library’s ancillary site.
