The item was issued by the Council of Veterans of Space Fleet of the USSR (Совет ветеранов космического флота СССР).
The obverse depicts the Scientific Research Vessel "Kegostrov" of Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1989-1990, the expeditionary equipment was dismantled, and the hull was melted down.
The reverse depicts the Scientific Research Vessel "Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin" of Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1996, the vessel was sold for scrap by authorities of the Ukraine.
