Gaev examines in detail the motifs of fourteen ancient Russian seals associated with the Novgorod fiefs given to princes for temporary use and provides detailed arguments for their attribution or reattribution. The temporal coverage of the bullae under consideration is over three centuries, starting from the 12th.

Reinforcing conclusions with the detailed genealogical research, the author significantly replenishes the analytical base of the rich sphragistic material of Northern Rus'. In terms of the sources' coverage used for sphragistic studies, and the command of the arguments, A.G. Gaev is perhaps the leading modern expert in this field, with a horizon comparable to the famous researchers of the Ancient Rus' sigillography in the past – such as N.P. Likhachev, V.L. Yanin.
