The Philatelic and Numismatic Office of San Marino issues the 2020 divisional coin set, including both 2-euro commemorative coins in proof version.
The first commemorative coin is dedicated to Raphael, son of Giovanni Santi and pupil of Perugino — a painter and architect of extraordinary early talent who came to embody the supreme ideal of serenity and beauty of the Renaissance. The obverse of the coin features the profile of the Virgin, a detail from the fresco Madonna di Casa Santi, the first masterpiece by the young Raphael, painted in the family home in Urbino, which now houses the prestigious Accademia Raffaello.
The second commemorative coin honors Giambattista Tiepolo, the greatest painter of the 18th century and the last exponent of the glorious Venetian school. The obverse depicts the moment when God’s angel saves Hagar and Ishmael, lost in the desert, by pointing them to a spring of water. The scene is a detail from the painting Hagar and Ishmael, one of Tiepolo’s absolute masterpieces, preserved at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a major Venetian confraternity.
