Description

This seven Medal Uncirculated Local Coins/Trade Dollars Set was issued in 1992 by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the Sesquicentenary of the Gold Coast. Three different ones were issued in a the seven (7) coin Coincard. An Aluminium-bronze $10, a Copper-nickel $5 and five Copper $1 coins/tokens were included in the Coincard.

In 1842,ex-government surveyor Robert Dixon produced the first accurate map of the Gold Coast, Albert and Tweed Shire region of what later became the southernmost coastal part of the colony of Queensland. From that time, travellers to the Gold Coast were no longer venturing into 'Unexplored Territory' and free settlers quickly made good use of Dixons map. These Gold Coast Trade Dollars help to celebrate the Sesquicentenary, or 150th anniversary, of overseas-born settlement on what has developed into Australia's premier resort area in 1992. The Gold Coast is now Australia's Sixth largest city and is very popular with Tourists.

These Trade Dollars could be used as legal currency only on the Gold Coast between 1/1/1992 to 31/12/1992. After that they were invalid as currency.
