Hello,

im not all that satisfied with the different Exonumia Types we have listed on Numista and there seem to be often confusions about the naming of some of them.

The issue I have in this example is with Exonumia Types

Commemorative souvenirs

Event Medal

Event Souvenir

Historical Medal

Commemorative souvenirs

All four seem to mean basically the same thing and thus similar types are splitted in the four different Types in our catalogue. All seem to fit in either Historical or Event medal but we have them split in 4 different types.

I can understand a new member seeing the different categories to choose from to have difficulties in finding out what is the right category.

Additionally Souvenir in our catalogue is meant to be for Tourist Souvenir pieces such as a Tourist Token that you can buy in the shop at the Eiffel Tower, however Souvenir is often misinterpreted as

Souvenir - An Event in history

Here what we rightly list in our catalogue as a Tourist souvenir N#189436

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Propositions would be as followed.

1.

Renaming of Souvenir medals

into Other medals

(Reason is that Souvenir does not fit here as most of what can be found in this category is not related to the naming of Souvenir)

2.

Creating a Type called

Historical and Event Medals

and merging of all four categories (Event Souvenir, Event Medal, Historical Medal and Commemorative Souvenir) into this newly created Type.

(Reason as mentioned before, currently we are having four different types altough all are pretty much the same and could fit into one.)

Please let me know what you think about the two points and feel free to give feedback on these types of Medals/Tokens.

Thank you,

Paul

This help page is about the type of coins, is not about exonumia.

I think there is a topic in this forum with definition of the exonumia types, but I did not find it.

Wanted & swap list (euro coins & world coins, exonumia and banknotes circulated) https://goo.gl/AQjfKp - I have euro & world CC coins for swap.

For me the word “Medal“ changes what I expect it to be. Medals, to me, are large, heavy items. Can’t fit in a 2 x 2. So this is what I would deem as a Historical Medal. Made well after and not an anniversary, or centennial just a time in history of an event.

An example of an Event medal. Something that was made for the sole purpose of an event that will occur in the near future. And will be sold at or distributed at the event.

Now, An Event souvenir is (to me) the same thing as an Event medal but smaller, lighter.

Commemorative souvenirs are again, smaller and lighter than my interpretation of medals. It will contain the words Anniversary or Commemorative. Centennials fall into this as well.

That is how I look at them.

By definition Tokens have some kind of usage, medals generally just the collactability aspect.

while in the definitions medals are described as „often“ being larger diameter items this is not always the case.

I do own items that are only around 10mm in size which are medals.

to me the lower two items you showed are also medal, just modern ones.

Medals are often of a larger size but size actually does not matter in the regard if something is a medal or not.

Sometimes the word Medallet, Medaillon is used for medals of small size, whilst large medals can be sometimes called table medal or also Plaque

of course Commemorative Tokens also exist. Dutch Counter Tokens of the 16th century for example often commemorate a historical event, whilst their usage was there for making calculations etc.

your point on Historical medal and Event medal I do understand, but still by that definition a large majority of the items we have in the event medal should actually be moved to Historical medals.

I do agree that medals come in different sizes and my opinion was just that, an opinion. Having this forum to debate these topics helps enlighten myself and others.

Many of the Exonumia items could be placed in different categories. You could go through the Personality and Portrait Medals or Religious Medals and the same thing may apply. The four you think should be combined would contain over 8500 items right now. I think having them separated is a better idea. No telling how much more these areas will grow over time.

I began using Numista when the Exonumia section had just started. Not saying that the way it was was right or wrong, but when it was redone to the system currently, a lot of things got mixed up. The miscellaneous tokens (currently 15,000+) needs a lot of work. I think as more exonumia collectors are drawn in hopefully to Numista more things will be added and corrected.

This is what makes Numista what it is so all opinions are important and need hearing.

Thats great 🙂

Absolutely agree that categories with too much inside them is not the way to go forward so in the future Im also for the addition of further sub-categories.

Still in this case I agree that Event Medal and Historical medal can be splitted but that it makes 2 Exonumia Types whilst we have four.

As mentioned before we have Types for Tourist souvenirs but a lot of commemorative medals are being lost within the Type Commemorative souvenirs (A category created for commemorative tourist medals) while these should go to either Event Medal or Historical Medal.

In future I could totally see a Type added named "Exhibition, Fair and Festival medals". I have regional books of south west Germany and they already list over 1000 types for a small region alone.
