Hello all,

A week back I bought this 2 Reichsmark from a shop. I paid melt plus tax. around $16.50. And today I‘m finally looking at it. I noticed it has 1989 where ‘Reichsmark‘ should be. I haven’t tested for silver but it does weight 9 grams. 9 gram 1 over the expected weight. Did I get ripped? the shop I buy from is reputable and Ive had no problems before. i have checked German coin and token catalogs and can’t seem to find anything. Any advice would help.

edit I found this on the side of the coin:  50 year German commemorative solid Germans silver

Clearly a reproduction of this:

N#3416

Also “German Silver” is a nickel brass.

Ah. I thought it was weird feeling but didn’t give a second though looks like I’m retuning this tomorrow.

thank you.

Before you return it, can you do a silver test at home?

Ice cube and ping test should give you a good idea, or if you are proficient with silver, just make a evaluation whether it is or not? Then maybe if the shop you bought it from has a xrf machine when you take it back, because although what Idolenz says is true about „German Silver“, „new silver“ from the German „Neu Silber“ description in the 70s 80s, it might actually be silver - if an American made it.

I have never seen something like this in Germany before, and don‘t know why anyone here would make such a copy. The coins are readily available here and the only reason for the year 1989 is for a hundred year anniversary of someone that isn‘t represented on the coin and was never represented on any coins. I would be interested to know if it is actually silver as the coin looks a little thicker than the real 2 Rm.

50 years after 1939 which was the last year the coin was minted.

Oh yeah that as well, I thought it was made by American NҤis to celebrate 100 year of someones birth.

i have returned it today and got my money back. I did the ping test which is dripping it on a surface. And  i t did not sound silver. Ive heard of the ice test but I haven’t seen it done nor have I done it myself. i will the say the dealer who sold it noticed it felt weird and the weight felt off in hand. next time ill look at it harder. Haha.

thank you all for commenting and helping me out.

Good news you got your money back, and if the shop then confirmed it wasn’t silver from a ping and the weight felt off to them, it probably wasn’t silver. So no need for further tests.
