I usually stay away commemoratives, especially the gaudy made-for-collectors silver commemoratives that were never meant to circulate. But recently I've been adding some of the silver commemoratives that seemed to circulate along with the usual coins. Like the 1927, 1951 and 1954 Australian florins
But the idea of circulating commemoratives was they were the same composition as the circulating coins at the time, for example the Aussie coins in 1927 were sterling silver and the 1927 commemorative florin was also sterling silver so circulated freely with the normal currency, people didn't feel as much need to hoard them. American currency in 1976 was cu-ni, the proofs being silver were not intended to be circulated.

I love them too, although they tend to be (much) more expensive than the 'normal' issues. I'm less picky than apuking, I like commems up to somewhere around 1960-70s, especially silver ones.
