I am thinking of making a site that helps people identify what country their coins are from.
The way i envisioned the site would be a simple tag-based image search site.
For a coin such as this: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces34007.html people would supposedly search "rooster" and the result would be a picture of the coin i linked to and pictures of all other coins with roosters except those that have the country's name obviously written on the coin for english speakers (in my rooster example, France and Malawi would not be shown because of this reason). I don't know about other coin collectors, but such a search tool that excludes obvious countries and boring commemoratives that are released by the tens of thousands of types each year would be very useful. Once the country is identified, the specific type of coin can be found on other sites that have extensive databases for each country. (like numista and zeno) The search function on numista is very useful, but it shows too many results (or too few, if the coins aren't described in detail). The results of my site's search function would be from the patterns i've seen while researching coins.
As another example, the Indian state of Lunavada would have only 2 tags/pictures, the lion and the chalice:

And the links to:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/inde_princiers-1.html
and
http://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=3857
Zeno has an advantage in regards of oriental coins, but my site would be with all countries.
(this is actually a quote from a PM i sent to xavier
1. Would you guys find a site such as this useful ? To me, finding the country is the more important part - because after you ID-ed the country correctly you just have to look through sites or catalogs for that country specifically. And my site would also link you to numista and zeno to ease your search (like in the above Lunavada example) :D

A site such as this would rely exclusively on pictures from numista, zeno and a few others (about 75% are from numista! ). And as you can imagine, it might be a major problem with copyright. (which is what i talked with xavier about) Numista's policy (it's the same on almost all sites such as this!) is that the person who uploads the photo owns it. https://en.numista.com/conditions.php
Citation9.The contents on this site are the property of their respective authors. They can not be reused without the consent of their respective authors. So, bummer for my site idea. And i'm guessing putting "© some numista user, i dunno who lol" next to each pic doesn't count.
2. Would you guys who added coins allow me to use the pics you uploaded on my own site (while linking back to numista) ? Do people usually allow others to use their images if asked ? Are there many people against this kind of thing ?
I have about 1500-2000 images that i am currently in the process of tracking down where i got them from. I use those pics to help me ID coins. I am making a list of users to which i will send a request similar to how i asked here. There will probably be about 200+ users to ask.
What frustrates me is that instead of studying coins i'll be stuck doing paperwork like this for a few months. :(
So there you have it, that's the wall of text about my current project
