Didn’t see that coming - Alphabetic 10p Coins

The decision of the Royal Mint to issue 26 new ten pence coins caught me by surprise. No doubt, this will build on the success of the Olympic 50p issues, and given the subject matter of the Alphabet will be an absolute boon for kids and new collectors and parents wishing to start a hobby for their children.

A bit bit of work for all us ...they need to be added to,Numista. I’ve ordered a Royal Mint album already, noting how much the price of albums went thru the roof after the Royal Mint stopped making them after previous issues. I don’t know easy they will be to get but I anticipate a flurry of swap activity here as people try to complete their sets.

Looking forward to the challenge.

regards all

Well, I know about it for a month now. I will say that it won´t be as successful as Olympics series.
Yes, they will get some attention for maybe a year, but eventually they will be then worth 10p as they should from the beginning. Why ?

1) They are 10ps.
2) They are more durable, so no rush to find a nice one in circulation
3) Dull design. Olympics at least had some design on them.

But yeah, time will show whether this is true or not.
It seems that the Royal Mint likes to copy the Royal Australian Mint when it comes to ideas as to what to put on coins.

In 2000 the RAM issued 29 Commemorative $5 coins for the Sydney Olympic Games highlighting the sports to be played. This is one example...

In 2006 the RAM issued 16 Commemorative 50 cent coins for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games highlighting the sports to be played. This is one example...

In 2011 the RM issued 29 Commemorative 50 pence coins for the London Olympic Games highlighting the sports to be played. This is one example...

In 2014 the RAM issued 26 Commemorative Alphabet $1 coins for inclusion in Baby Mint sets or to be bought as a complete 26 coin set. This is one example...

And now in 2018 the RM has issued 26 Commemorative Alphabet 10 pence coins to highlight Quintessentially British things.

What will they copy from the RAM next I wonder? Hopefully they will copy the entrance price to the Mint. The RAM is free entry and is an awesome place to visit in Canberra. The RM charge £13.50 to just go in and have a look. :8D:8D:8D

Come on you did not see that coming. Well that as easy as 1 2 3 - A B C the mint want money from you and me.
It is, what it is, or is it.
Those designs are anything but dull. They are imaginative, and any collector by theme will need at least one of these coins in their collection. UK is not the first country to do this, Australia has that honor. I for one, hope that Canada or the USA might consider something as interesting as this, I suspect that more might show up to the already crowded coinclub meeting we have in Oklahoma City.

Cheap low-denomination commemoratives you can pluck from circulation are always nice! It brightens up my day just a little bit when I find something worth keeping in my change, a sentiment that I believe holds true among many other Numista members!

I like it Daryl, you're a poet and you don't know it! I, for one, will not be paying £52.00 for £2.60 worth of coins, nor will they clutter up my collection but I will inevitably have to add some to my swap list for the benefit of those who do want them. One of our members has already submitted 26 new listing requests for this series, including images from Westminster Collection, and I will set about editing and publishing very soon.

You know Rick one the first things that popped in my head was. Oh god Rick going to have to add 26 pages to the UK catalog. A lot of work. And thank you for all your time on making the UK catalog great.
Me , yes I will make room for them. So if by chance I get some they will have a home. Iam been bitten very hard by the collecting bug for the UK. Right now I have 722 coins and 222 different types for the UK , I think. My goal in the next two years is to have 1,000 coins and 300 types.
It is, what it is, or is it.
Actually £52 for £2.60 face value of BUNC coins is not too bad. When the Royal Australian Mint did a similar thing with Alphabet coins in 2015 they charged AU$270 for AU$26 face value worth of BUNC coins.

You could buy the whole set of 26 for that AU$270, or if you wanted them individually they were AU$15 each. At least the RAM gave a discount if you bought all 26 in one go.

Then the RAM went and released them again in 2016 and 2017. So if you were MAD and wanted every issue you had to buy even more. :8D8~:(

I think the RAM realised it was not a good decision to issue them again and again as they have been dropped and are not available dated as 2018. The sales in 2016 and 2017 were very very low. Less than 2000 minted of each coin.

Cheers Mike

I loved all the comments;

Even the little poetic chide at me for not being aware, I suppose the Royal Mint trying to get money comment rings true also.

I was aware of the Australian issue , and the Numista comments about them being a bonus to get children to start collecting coins. I am sure it will have the same positive impact here..whatever the motive behind their issue. I couldn’t agree more about the Royal Mint tour which was a huge disappointment and a terrible let down.

I am sure most collectors will want to find and hunt them down in their change rather than buy a complete set at the outset.
I never have but I'll try coin 'roll' (bag) hunting for them in 10ps.
Normally its 1p, 2p or 50p, £2.

It'll be fun but I wouldn't go all out for them.

Thanks Daryl, I can't take all the credit, there are many members out there who submit new listings and modification requests as part of a joint effort to improve the catalogue, for which I am very grateful. There is one particularly dedicated member who is a prolific contributor to the UK catalogue and has gone to the trouble of putting together the listings for all 26 Great British Coin Hunt 10p's so all I had to do was some minor editing and they are now all published here.

Wow .. That was great work by the member that did all the work. It takes a lot of time and careful work to make sure it all looks good and has all the information required. Top marks to them and of course Radrick the Referee.

I am comparatively new to collecting to give advice, but if you are collecting the new ten pence coins, I would advise buying the Royal Mint album while at a reasonable price.

When I started my 50p collections I bought the albums cheaply, but when my Grandson started a few years later, the Royal Mint had discontinued the albums and then Amazon and eBay were charging 60/70 quid for them ! So he hasn’t got them.

Hence the advice with the new 10p issues.
The ONLY one I like is the Greenwich Meridian.
I am a little concerned that my private comments have become public comments with the new format!
