Greetings,

Going through old items and came across a very worn coin from a Canadian ancestor. The only possible identification is what appears to be a campgate motif. Is that correct? Any other ideas on this coin's age, materials, etc.?

The diameter is 29mm.

Thanks-
Kevin
Welcome to Numista. Weight, diameter, composition and better photos would be helpful.
Harryg,

I reposted some cropped photos, but as I mentioned, it's very badly worn and in order to get any detail, it needs to be at an angle. The measured diameter is 29mm, but I have no idea the composition or weight.

Thanks-
At 29mm I don't think it's a campgate, those are usually much smaller. The style also looks earlier than campgate coins to me but I could be wrong. Can you maybe read some of the letters on the obverse? The name of the emperor should be there and knowing the emperor would get us closer to identifying it.

Oh - is everyone thinking it is a Roman coin?
Looks like a United Kingdom 1/2 Penny to me -
and on the reverse in one of the corners looks like the head of Britannia.
The lettering GEORGIUS is also on older UK coins about 200 years ago.

Coincidentally I identified a similar coin yesterday ...

Yes, fairly sure it is one of those two coins in the links from yesterday -
and probably this one ...

as on obverse the II letters (top right) are further back.

Haha, this is probably why the obverse letters didn't make any sense to me and I had no idea who the portrait was. Nice find! :O
